Default Fun projects evr

Anyone familiar with Fun projects evr. I changed my generator for an alternator when I first got my car so I could run brighter bulbs and turn signals. I still have 6 volts, only now with the alternator, which does just fine. I have been reading about evr installs on stock generators and would really like to put my generator back on if they perform well, just think the generator would look so much better.

I had one and did not like the delay in charging that it had. I got on of Tom Wesenbergs internal regulators that replaces the third brush and like that better.

I have both types installed on my cars. Haven't seen much difference. One thing I found was the LED tail lights and brake lights flicker at idle. I'm not going to worry about that. On Tom's EVR it could be the diode cutout I'm using that when I tested, they start letting voltage thru at 3.3 volts (that was more than one cutout). Have an original cutout on another car but haven't checked that one out yet. Just installed LED tail lights so still getting used to the ammeter not moving when I hit the brakes.

I have the Fun Projects electronic voltage regulator in my '30 and it's worked well for many years. Very pleased.

A fella who restores old cars nearby says there is a company in Toledo that will install the guts from the Alternator into the original Generator Body.

Has anyone heard of this and if so, what do you think of it?

I have noticed that with my alternator installed, I have to rev the engine a couple of times after I start it to get the ammeter where it should be. Otherwise, the Aahoogah horn won't operate properly until the ammeter needle is registering in the center of the gauge.

Any idea as to why this is required and if it is normal?

I've ran the alternator for several years and have never had a problem starting or anything. Lights work good too.

I have a stock generator with a Fun Products EVR. I've used it for 10,000 miles. It works well, however the instructions caution not to exceed 15 amps charging rate.

I have found no need to go to an Alt.

Best to create another thread for this one!

Another thing to watch for:

From installation instructions:

"Never short the voltage regulator terminals together as with a jumper wire to test the operation of the regulator or to flash the generator -
The voltage regulator will be damaged. Remove the voltage regulator from the generator before performing any tests on the generator."

Complete instructions are here for the 6 volt Positive ground model. 12 volt ones have different page.

The only alternator that looks like the generator that I am aware of is the PowerGen. http://www.jegs.com/i/Powermaster/713/82006/10002/-1

You have to rev the engine to get the alternator to charge is because it is a self energizing alternator and it's normal. I really don't pay much attention to it. I just drive slowly up the street while warming the engine and trans and it starts charging on it's own.

I bought my "EVR in a cutout can" from Mac's 5 years ago or so. Don't know but likely made by fun projects??? Can't tell it from stock and it has done a great job for me. Simple as it gets to install and no more fiddlin' (technical term) with the 3rd brush. There is no delay in charging, as soon the engine starts the EVR starts charging, then tapers off to maintenance charge. Haven't saw Tom W's EVR, I'm sure its great but I already had this one before I knew Tom made them. Very easy to install. Set your charge rate at 14 or 15 amps with the old cutout still in place, then simply replace old cutout with the new one. Few minutes job. Mine has nice plating, looks just like the cutout I took off.

You need to do a horn tuneup to get it to loosen up and sound with battery only.
The process is described in a Restorer magazine within the last two years.

I guess the only 'fun' projects i've been involved in have been ' fun bags'.

The warning about shorting the terminals on the gen with the FuIn unit is spot on. It will wipe out the EVR . The problem is , there is no repair information or help from the manufacture. I have had one of each and recommend Tom's unit.
