Transmission/shift tower question.
Checking out a transmission out of a '28 Roadster. After making sure that the shift tower is moving freely, I noticed the rod that moves the shifting fork protrudes substantially further from the tower base when in 1st gear than in 3rd gear. The first photo shows 1st gear...the 2nd shows 3rd gear. Bench testing the tower out of the transmission, the rods protrude about the same distance from the base.
I have two transmissions and have switched towers between the two and gotten the same results. Everything seems to be working correctly. The transmission turns as I'd expect. The travel between 2nd and 3rd just 'feels' short with the transmission on the bench. I guess I just wanted to see if anyone had any input or experience with this. |

Re: Transmission/shift tower question.
The rods move to different positions depending on what gear you are in.

Re: Transmission/shift tower question.
The throw to third is shorter because you are only engaging a full circle of internal teeth, which are shorter than the external teeth engaged for first and second gear.
First, second, and reverse need more movement to slide the full length of the gear teeth. |
