Default 1940 Ford

The Green Bible on page 303 shows part # 78-7085- B as the retainer (trans. main shaft bearing) at the rear of the 3 speed transmission used in 1937-40 90 HP cars and also 1939-41 commercial trucks. This is also commonly called the rear transmission mount.

On the same page of the Green Bible is shown part # 21A-7085, retainer (trans. main shaft bearing) used in 1942-48 8 cylinder 90 and 100 HP v-8 cars.
Also called rear trans. mount.

QUESTION: Are parts 78-7085-B and 21A-7085 retainers interchangeable? The center to center measurement of the bolt holes is 8 inches.

They both look like the one shown here except for the center to center distance on mine is 8 in., not 10.

They will both bolt up to the rear of the transmission. The 21a part has a shorter center to center distance than the 78 part.
The 21a part will not match your '40 chassis.

Kube, Thank you very much for answering my question. I have attached a photo of my OEM 1940 transmission that is still in the car. Do you happen to know what the center-to-center distance is on the 1940 retainer shown in photo of my 40 below?

I took the photo years ago but didn't check the center line to center line of the holes. Thanks, JIM

Jim ..... The 78-7085 retainer measures 10" between holes on center.

The 21A-7085 measures 8" on center.

The 99A-7085 also measures 8" between holes on center.

Coop

The photo of your transmission does not show the proper rear bearing retainer for the 1940 with an 85 HP engine. When you take it off and clean it you will find the part number embossed into the casting. Below is a photo of the 78- rear bearing retainer note the connection of the ears to the center section and the thickness of the center section. Plus the small ear off the front of the LH mounting bolt loocation.

Didn't we go through this a couple of months ago? Yours being so thick appears like 60HP.

THANK YOU all very much for delving into my question and providing valuable measuring info. re: hole center line distance. I didn't know about the 8 in. and 10 in. difference.
The current retainer on my 40 was on the OEM transmission (still in the car) when I bought the 40 in 1963.

If I ever need to replace it, I will be sure to check the part #.

Bill Schwartz, I am pretty familiar with 40 Fords, where does the brass connector you speak of go?

I wonder if he means brass condensers? I too am not aware of a brass connector on a 40.

Denny's condensers are things of beauty. Not only that, but they have turned out to be tougher than nails after having sold hundreds to happy users out in the field.

Bill,

I found your email in my "Spam" folder and have replied.

Coop,

Thanks for the compliment. I am actually getting embarrassed.
