Starter
If the starter hangs up on the flywheel, is it obvious? My starter still works fine but not sure if it is hanging up. Is the new type starter gear the way to go?
Thanks |

"My starter still works fine but not sure if it is hanging up"

Re: Starter
If it appears to be working correctly, leave it alone.

Re: Starter
Probably hanging up because the armature shaft is bent.

When this happens to me, I put the car in 3rd gear and gently rock the car back and forth until it pops loose.

Re: Starter
Just to add to what others have said, try this . If the starter is hung up on the flywheel it locks the engine so that you won't be able to turn the engine with the hand crank. When this happens, try what new shirt says in post #6. If when you hit the starter button and the starter spins but doesn't engage with the flywheel it can be one of three things. The bendix spring could be broken, maybe you've dropped a bendix bolt or you've got oil and cluch dust on the helix of the bendix that won't allow the bendix gear to sling into place on the flywheel.

Re: Starter
Correct me if I'm WRONG, I can take it!!
EXACTLY what IS a locked STARTER?? Here's my take on it, starting with TOO much ADVANCE causes the engine to turn backwards, propelling the starter gear backwards & winds it TIGHTER on the spiral & winds the Bendix spring, tighter than a DRUM!! THEN, EVERYTHING from the starter back plate on down to the spring retainer on the end of the shaft is loaded with TREMENDOUS HORIZONTAL PRESSURE & the starter gear CAN'T UN-WIND ITSELF ON THE SPIRAL & release itself from the flywheel! THEN, you gotta' push it in gear, to turn the motor FORWARD, to propel the starter gear, to get it traveling back down the spiral!! There are many MIS-CONCEPTIONS about what goes on. Some even "think" it is gear teeth, climbing on top of other gear teeth???????????? (Sorry this is so LOOOONG, it took me 27 minutes to tipe it!) Bill W.
