Default shifter fork pins

While rebuilding my gear shifter assy, I noticed there is some play in the pin holes for the shifter fork to shaft.
Before I replace the pins and peen them in place, has anyone tried peening the pins when they are red hot?.....similar to installing a frame bracket rivet??

The pins are hollow and have a seam, so I just insert an awl and spread the end just enough to keep the pins from falling out.

There should be no (zero) play in the fit of the shift fork pins. I use blued-steel roll pins instead of the stock pins, and I spread the ends of the pins with a tapered drift pin.

FWIW....the hot forging of the pins did not seem to help much, not sure why as it is the only way to install frame component rivets.
I might try the spring pin method.

I used the spring pins on the last one I did.

Actually roll pins are different, in that the spring material is actually rolled more than 180 degrees. They are still available. I grew up calling split pins roll pins, and that is what they are usually called. Mc Master Carr calls them coiled spring pins and slotted spring pins.

I used roll pins and they work really well and take out the play.
