Default Twisted Front Axle for Model A/AA Museum...

A few months ago there was a request for a "twisted" front axle for the new Model A/AA museum.

Someone had one and it was hopfully going to end up in the museum.

What was the outcome on this venture?

There was one on display at Hershey a few years ago. A link to an article about them may be of interest to new members. Bob

I was lucky to see a twisted one this fall the owner bought a whole bunch of parts back in the 60s there was one in the pile of parts he wasn't sure what it was at the time and was thinking of scrapping it but after finding out what it was after reading about the axel in a old ford book put it on the garage wall it's still there yes i touched it after i found out the history on it i hope the museum got one for everyone to look at so much ford history in that twisted axel.

There is not one there yet. I will follow this post and see if anyone comes forward to donate one. Thanks!

The Grand Opening is only one month away. It is shaping up nicely. We are still waiting on two more cars to arrive and some other odds and ends to finalize.

Pretty sure Nostalgia Sid out of Oklahoma had a twisted front axle at Chickasha...he drops axles, so it might have been one he did himself but it may be worth asking.

Maybe it was an item the dealership could buy. Ford offered a cut-a-way engine for $60.00 around 1926, don't know if they offered Model A's as well.

Maybe only the big name dealers got one for display i will try to find out more info. when i go back to get more parts from the owner of the axle i will talk to him about thinking of putting it on desplay at the museum.

I don't know that any dealers were given an axle; I wonder if the axles were shown at the 1933 Exposition of Progress at Detroit, the various Ford Salons where new cars and features were touted, and displays of that nature.

Wonder what machine they used to twist the axle ?

How much shorter was the twisted axle, end-to-end, or did it stretch ?

It's looking like a bolt threader. Obviously for some heroic bolts from the look/size of the jaws relative to the size of the axle.

I wonder if it fit, and if it did would it be a stronger/springier/weaker axle?

Oh, but what if "unwound" while you were driving ?

( It might fling the wheels off'n it ! )

Realize this has been a dead thread for quite some time.... but I actually have one of these I bought like 30 years ago.
I'm in central PA... it was probably at Hershey or Carlisle Where I bought it... among lots of other stuff.

I knew these were rare and the backstory was really cool... seems like there's literally only a few out in the wild.

(I think most of them were sent back to the factory and re-melted/molded)

I am glad you found this thread and posted this information. I do hope this axle ends up in the museum along with whatever information on the back-story can be found. It's a fine example of Ford's salesmanship techniques.

A few years back someone had a bunch of them at Turlock
they were twisted in all configurations
straight twist, one side twisted one way ,the other side twisted the other way
it really shortened the axle so they wernt useable

I've always thought one would be great on the front of a Front Engine Dragster.

It was on the other site. Tons of pics. The axles are the 9th, and 10th pic down.

believe it's a '34 axle from the 34 world fair.
Anyone is an authority on these... please feel free to comment as to if that's correct and/or how rare these actually are and perhaps what it's worth if i were to ever sell it?

Not sure my intentions for it... just decided to look up some info on it and stumbled across this board. Way back when, we didn't have the internet to find this stuff :0

wouldnt let me upload pics... so i attached a link to photobucket with a few pics I snapped of it.

Also here's a video I found a while back of them doing something similar at a trade show: 7:24 mark is when they twist axels
