Cleaning a Hydrostatic fuel gauge

When using Hydrochloric acid to clean a Hydrostatic fuel gauge how long can the acid safely be in the gauge with ot causing any damage to the gauge ?

I’ve found that a thin wire like a guitar string works well for cleaning the passages in them.

I have just cleaned the glass tube and bits on the 34 gauge today, I used a cotton bud with half of the cotton peeled off and brake clean.

When using hydrochloric acid to clear the line I do a rinse with acetone or laquer thinner several times and low pressure compressed air to blow it all out. If the line does not clear with the acid in a few min then it is really plugged.The wire will work only to the 90degree bend at the base of the glass tube. I have had a few that were plugged solid so had to cut the line about an inch from the brass hex and then with the wire to roto root the line.I then use a bit larger piece of the copper line and slip it over then soldered to reconnect.
Renners Corner sells a new sight glass tube with the copper line.The line needs to be soldered on to the hex.

I just leave the acid in for about 10-20 Minutes. Then rinse over and over again with water, or follow the instructions above. If the acid can not reach the stoppage chances are it will not work.

Thanks for all the tips, I did a 15 min acid soak some old gauge fluid worked up into the glass tube. Did a couple of water flushes and blew it out with air.
Then a isopropyl alcohol and a pipe cleaner in the glass tube then more compressed air to clear it out. Now reinstall it and see how it works.
