Default Spin on oil filter adapter for 292

I'm replacing my old 239 Y-block with a 292. I'm moving the external components from the old engine to the new block. I'm surprised I couldn't find any discussions about spin on oil filter adapters using Search so starting one here.

After removing the spin on oil filter, I removed the spin on adapter which consisted of the adapter plate, large seal, insert (threaded piece), and rubber washer (seal?) that fit the insert. In looking at the various parts houses, I can find a complete adapter kit that includes the adapter plate, large seal and insert, but I can't find just the large seal. My questions are: Is the rubber washer for the insert not needed(since I don't see it in the catalogs)? and can you buy just the large seal? I would like to have all new seals on the new engine.

Second, I found that this spin on oil filter adapter does not attach directly to the block, but to what I believe is the original can type filter attachment components which consisted of another plate similar to the adapter plate above and a bushing (part # 6890) that screws into the threads on the block. There was no seal under this first plate that mates directly to the block. Should there be one?

Thanks,

I believe that seal is available I have several in my stash o parts so they must be? Try one of the TBird parts houses. It should be a flat hard rubber gasket as I recall.

Go over to yblocksforever and run a search. Ted Eaton has a good explanation of making sure the plate isn't warped, and how to fix it. Post if the search doesn't find it.

Yes, I checked a several catalogs and online and didn't see just the gasket listed. I called NPD since they were the only one with 24/7 phone support but the guy couldn't find anything and suggested calling back on Monday to see if they can contact the vendor.

Thanks for the Symco Shakedown site, that's a new one on me. That looks like what I am looking for.

I should have included some pictures. Should there be one of these gaskets between the first plate(the red one in my pictures) and the block? This plate is held on with the bushing that screws into the engine block. The fitting that comes with the adapter kit screws into this bushing.

1st Picture: plate attached directly to block with large bushing
2nd Picture: spin on adapter kit: adapter plate, gasket and fitting that screws into large bushing in 1st picture
3rd Picture: spin on adapter kit installed on block, screwed into large bushing over the red plate in 1st picture

I wonder if I need two gaskets?

Thanks for the suggestion for YblocksForever. It appears like I need to discard the original plate (red in my pictures), and replace it with the new adapter plate. I will try that tomorrow. When I was doing some trial and error with the different pieces earlier today, I thought the new adapter plate didn't seem to fit right directly to the block, but I will check again. Also, The fitting with the adapter kit will have to screw into the original bushing that held on the plate being discarded. So I guess I discard the original red plate and re-install the bushing directly to the block, then attach the new plate using the fitting that came with the adapter kit? I'll find out tomorrow if that seems to work. Once I figure that out, I'll order a new gasket to put it on permanently.

An easy way to find the gasket you need is to buy the old style oil filter element. The gasket should be in the box. Be sure to open the box in the store to see if it's there. I have had rubber gaskets blow out. Try to find the old fiber gasket.
