Default More help with generator

Aloha,
Generator not charging, had a broken brush, replaced it but still no go.
I understand you can check if the generator is working by jumping the cutout and see if you get a charge. Where do you attach the jump wire to bypass the cutout, do you attach between the 2 bolt that are closest the radiator, or between one of those (if so which one the one on the side of the motor or the other one?0 and the one that is closest to the firewall?
I also find some of what look like silver solder on some of the inside of the generator and attach to the wires? Where is that coming from?

Lastly any suggestions on where to rebuild the generator if in fact it is no longer working.
As always, I greatly appreciate any help.
Happy thanksgiving.

Your armature overheated and threw solder from the ends of the wires soldered to the commutator bars. If you get lucky you can resolder them and have a good armature. Best to have someone check it on a growler though.

To bypass the cutout (in case it's bad) just jump a clip lead between the two terminals, the input and output terminal on each side of the can.

I have seen a couple with just a little thrown solder, and they were still good. If the cutout contacts didn't make a good connection then the generator can put out up to 40 volts and overheat. I've never had a problem with my original cutout. I think most problems original at the wiring connections or ammeter terminals coming loose, then the voltage goes up and burns the cutout contacts. Then some cheap junk cutout replaces the quality original cutout, and the problems continue.

Aloha,
Their was not a lot of solder thrown around, but again I am not sure how much there is. The inside of the armature of the generator, the field coil etc are black, but do not smell burnt!! I will try to bypass the cutout and see if it works. Any other work around to make sure if the generator works or not.

With the belt off, then you bypass the cutout with the jumper wire, and if the generator doesn't turn slowly in it's normal direction of rotation, it needs to be worked on.

Aloha,
Took the cutout off, has well as the belt, left the generator hooked up and connected the positive from the battery to the terminal of the generator, nothing but sparks.... guess I shopping for a new one.

You want to jumper from the negative battery terminal, the one hooked to the starter switch, to the generator terminal.

Aloha,
Any suggestions on what could cause the overheating?

Bad cutout, generator set up to produce to much juice, anything else?

Most likely a bad connection started the trouble.
