Loud clunking coming from rubble seat area
Well, I heard this noise before but now that I have my spring oilers installed and the car is so quite this is the next area I need to tackle. When I go over bumps I hear a loud clunking the echos through the rumble seat area. I tightened all the body bolts as they were a little loose - no help. I made a special clamp and insulator for the tail pipe so its tight. The trunk seems to lock tight. The bottom seat seems to be tight. I'm lost as I can find anything loose. I did notice the rear end pumpkin is toughing the bottom trunk floor pan so I put a piece of rubber in there, didn't help. Any ideas?

Re: Loud clunking coming from rubble seat area
Could it be slack in the rumble seat lid if it's not closing tight enough? You mentioned that you checked the bottom of the seat but is the back of the rumble seat possibly loose on the lid?
Are your rear spring shackles greased enough and not worn out? Any cracked or broken leafs? |

Check your rear spring where it connect to the shackles. Sounds too like your rear spring may have gone bad like mentioned above.
Let us know what you find. Larry |

Trashy blonde in trunk area?
Shock arms loose? Bounce on the rear bumper and see if you can dupe the sound. sound travels in the metal of the car. It could be coming from some other area. |

Re: Loud clunking coming from rubble seat area

If you have original shocks on the rear, possibly one of the shocks is bad, no resistant, will cause noise whenever you go over a slight bump; as someone else mentioned, a loose shock arm will make the same kind of noise. Ron |

Re: Loud clunking coming from rubble seat area
Thanks, all good things to look for. I tried bouncing the car and don't hear anything its only when I go over bumps. The spare tire is tight. Last year I had the rear end out and I inspected everything to the best of my knowledge and all looked good. The noise is more of a tiny bang. Can anyone tell me how much clearance they have on top of the rear end pumpkin to the bottom of the floor pan - mine is touching, I think this might be the issue.

Check the mounting bolts between the shock body and the frame. That would be a heavy knock, not a tiny bang.

Re: Loud clunking coming from rubble seat area
okay sorry I'm loosing my mind guess that happens with age - I crawled under the car this morning and it's not the rear end that's close to the underside of the floor pan its the spring. You can see where I put the piece of rubber - is this normal for the spring to be so close to the floor pan, it actually touches it? Sorry I don't know why it flipped the pic.

Re: Loud clunking coming from rubble seat area
The clearance between top of rear end center to underside of rear spring on my 30 Tudor is approx 5 1/2 inches. As the other commenters have suggested I would focus on the rear end assy. Spring [how many leafs], condition of them, and shackles! The EXHAUST CLAMP should not be tight! It must have a very small amount of slippage to allow for body twist, this protects the manifold joint from exhaust leakage!

Re: Loud clunking coming from rubble seat area
Well, I had a buddy come over and we jumped and banged all over the place. One thing we determined is where you put your feet in the rumble seat area the floor has a bow and it echos like a drum and tends to rattle. I plan to run a piece of angle iron from one side of the frame to the other and wedge insulation in there to tighten up the bow and see what happens. No holes drilled just use holes that are available.

Re: Loud clunking coming from rubble seat area
since its the floor can you throw a sandbag or pile of phonebooks on the floor and go for a drive?
the floorpans rotted out on my s10 and make a weird sound/vibration if the wind is just right... OR could have a buddy rid eback there and have him listen and poke around to see if he can locate the bump.

Re: Loud clunking coming from rubble seat area
My Coupe had the same thing with the rear crossmember close to the floor pan. There was a piece of the frame webbing riveted to the floor pan. It looked like a Factory install.
