the double stamped firewall
We just acquired a double stamped 31 cowl. What was the time period when these were used? Iam thinking May of 31? I have only seen one on a bay area car. I guess I could use the indented firewall introduction date.
Thanks, Bob |

Re: the double stamped firewall
These were used when the indented firewall first came into use in May 1931. Ford used up all the old style firewalls by simply re-stamping them into the indented style. They were most likely used in for a short time in May 1931 until the old stock ran out and the new style became available for production.

Re: the double stamped firewall
I would think that they kept a number of the flat firewalls for replacement parts on the earlier cowls.

Re: the double stamped firewall
So there could be restamped indented firewalls for a while after May. Anyone have a date of manufacture on their car with a restamped firewall? Like on the front subrail at the front of the front seat.

Re: the double stamped firewall
Here's one I took from a car being judged at Vancouver in 2010. I don't know the owner. Notice the holes for the data plate.

Re: the double stamped firewall
Thanks for the welcome, Rex_A_Lott.
If memory serves me right, I think it was a 1931 wide bed pickup - the same Bell Telephone truck on display at Puyallup. It seems to me there was something else unusual about the gas tank, but I can't recall what it was. |

Re: the double stamped firewall
I think if i can remember right it was Toledo , Ohio MARC meet ,,i believe there was 3 there in the parking lot... I thought they were really neat and different... Someone told me a law was passed in P.A. which made FORD move the turn off gas valve inside,, in the lap of the passenger to outside under the hood and over the exhaust manifold .l.o.l.

Re: the double stamped firewall
Thanks for sharing, I have a late 31' and my indented firewall was not re-stamped. I was not aware of that Ford re-stamped some to make them indented.

Re: the double stamped firewall
You have to wonder how tall that stack of firewalls was that got restamped. Do you think the restamped ones used a different die than the fresh stamped indented ones? Does Ford still have records stored on production details like this? Bob

Re: the double stamped firewall
the one pictured in Vancouver is the phone truck belonging to Barbara Jo Birt it was on display at the national in Puyallup and if I remember right she was docked points because of the data plate holes in Vancouver.

Re: the double stamped firewall
From the look I started in the past threads on this subject, the holes for the data plate were left as is when the firewalls were restamped. I will take a picture and post. Thanks for the lead on the phone truck restoration. I found another referral to a steel top so I could go with the idea of doing a wide bed ccpu with a standard cab. Mot floated a number of 250 restamped. I can follow pluck's lead and see if there is a parts release, I hope the light pitting of the cowl will cleanup with media blasting. And I have a real nice gas tank so I have a good start. This will start out as a driver. I would be in the wrong league if I set my goal above that.

Re: the double stamped firewall
Bob,
The Dash Assembly for all A and AA Chassis is Part Number A-35328-B. This was from the August 15, 1930 Body Parts List. Go to the MAFFI Site and plug in the part number and see what you come up with. WOW...A list of 24 releases...Should prove interesting...Just order the Part Release. That would make a great Evolution article for one of the Model A Magizines! Hint hint!!! Re: the double stamped firewall
Steve, yes this would make a good filler article. I will do more research and you are the second to mention this. I could use a few more examples of existing cars, guess I had better renew my national club memberships and put an ad in each magazine for examples as I have see others do. I think a case of Brentwood Sweet Corn might sustitute for a root crop, although freight would probably make that a non-problem.
I will see where the research leads. Thanks for the input, like layers of an onion. Bob |

Re: the double stamped firewall
Just wondering if the painted rubber gromet got the point deduction and not the rivet holes. Bob

Re: the double stamped firewall
I discussed the restoration at Turlock with Dave, the guy who did the restoration, I think he goes by Doctor Dave, and lives now in Oregon. He said the truck was an original phone company truck. Bob
