wayne fields
hi people. I have a 239 merc motor , I ordered a new oil pump and received a short type rated at 80 psi. instead of a 50psi long type . question is , could I fit this to my motor in place of the old 50lbs one? if so would I have to change the pressure relief valve spring in the block. also I wish to use the existing original oil gauge and sender if possible, it is in a 1938 81c pickup. thanks wayne.

Re: wayne fields
The oil pump I usually use for 221 and 239 FH engines is the Melling #M19 standard volume pump for '49-'53 Ford/Merc, with a '49-'53 truck #6615 pump cover and inlet tube for rear sump oil pans. This is considered to be a short pump compared to the pumps used on earlier FH engines. I would not recommend using the Melling #M-15 high volume/high pressure pump unless you are building a race engine with loose tolerances.

Re: wayne fields
Good recommendation by Jim. See Ron's book nostalgia about the extra heat a hi pressure pump creates. You can get the M#19 from Job Lot in NY. Still made in the USA.
