Default Running Boards (painted)

Seeking suggestions for preserving the paint on my open pickup running boards (i.e. painted/no rubber matting). Prefer ideas for daily in/out of cab use but removable if decide to ‘show’. Just don’t have the heart to drill bolt holes in my restored original boards for step plates.

Like Mitch, I also do not use the running boards to step on however the easiest method for moving the vehicle around at slower speeds is to cut a piece of MDF to the shape of the running board and then glue the rubber non-slip gripping material (like used in motorhomes to keep TVs from sliding off the countertops) to the bottomside of the board. This will provide a nice place to step without slipping. Another option is to remove your shoes and step on/in with your socks.

Tie a string to a small rubber mat, and store it on the floor. When you enter the truck just lay the rubber mat on the running board, get in, then pull the string to bring the mat back inside.

Place "welcome" door mats in front of your car, or you could go to a medical supply site and buy a box of those disposable paper "booties" that surgeons wear over their shoes!

Had a 32 coupe years (decades) ago with white painted running boards. ALWAYS stepped over them, girls had to also. Never gave it a thought about stepping on them.

My Model A came with step plates, so I didn't have to worry about drilling holes.

And I use them all the time.

3 out of the 4 vehicles I own have running boards, and they get used. In the one that doesn't have running boards, they are missed! (Besides the Model A, the other 3 are all "modern" vehicles)

My friend put NEW running boards on his '32, YEARS ago & nobody ever has stepped on them, even him! AND, he's an Old Polio survivor, wears one full leg brace & has a TERRIBLE time, just getting in his car!! WEIRD!!!

Think magnetic signs like those used on commercial vehicles. Even with raised dimples in RB, there should be enough contact to hold them while driving. If funds available, you could have Ford logo printed on the mat.

How about a big "NO STEP" sign from an FA/18?

I bit the bullet 35 years ago and drilled holes for step plates, have not regretted it.
