Default King Pin Play 31 Deluxe Roadster

What I thought to be bearing play turns out to be king pin play.

I tapped a wooden wedge between the brake backing plate and the king pin and the play stopped. It is a very, very little amount of play when the wheel is grabbed at the 12 and 6 o clock and wiggled.

Is it ok to leave in the play? Would this cause any high speed vibration?

If not, what is the fix?

Make sure the backing plate bolts are not loose.. This is also very common...you should be able to see the movement or feel it with your fingers while someone moves it
If the king pin play is that little I would not worry about it, just grease them up real good..
Modern car king pins are allowed some play and each vehicle has a fail replace me specification.

I'm using a temporary front axle assembly while I rebuild my original on my 28. The temporary has a lot of king pin play, as I can move the tire a couple inches by rocking it at top and bottom. It doesn't bother the steering and it also does NOT have the death wobble. I'll rebuild it when I finish the original axle.

OK, good glad to hear it.

I did tighten all of the backing plate bolts. Again, its a very slight movement, like a loose bearing.

Thanks Mitch and Tom.
