I have always thought that the '33 and '34 spare tire covers were the same. I could be mistaken. It is one of those things that you assume.
Here is a photo of my '34 tire cover.
The photo is cut a little, at the top, as I took the photo to show the dual exhaust.

The face plate is the same for both years, but the '33 outer band has a stainless steel moulding around the center of the perimeter that the '34 lacks. The formed bead in the band is also wider on a '34 cover than on the '33 cover.

Thanks David, now to find one! He has a near complete car bar the spare wheel cover, it's a 33 sports coupe, I don't think they were available in the USA, and they only made about 120 here early in 33. Apparently they didn't have the tooling to fabricate the full coupe body, so they made it a sports coupe till the tooling arrived. It will be a very nice car when done. Regards Dan( sorry no pics, I forgot to take a photo while I was there last week.)

I have one with the stainless ring with a overall width of 5 1/4 inches. The plain, no stainless one for my 1934 is 5 1/2 inches wide. Could the 5 1/4 width be for a 1932? Or could the 5 1/2 width be for a 1935-36?

'32 tread covers or bands are 5" wide, but I'm away from my car stuff at present and can't measure the '33-'34 and '35-'36 tread covers for the time being.

Seems to me the number you're looking for is 5 1/4 " . On the faceplates the stud-nut attachment of the trim ring carried into very early 35 before going to the slot - bend the tab arrangement . Well at least one existed that had studs but was 35 dimensions . There is both types in a post above but again - never seen a 33-34 with slots .

Here is the cover that came on my quite original 33 (very late 33, 34 'transition' car, as identified by serial #, by David awhile back). Judging by the 'paint-history', I could assume that this cover might be original to the car - but, I'm not sure. I also note that the 'experts' from the EFV8 club that have looked at this, have often described this cover as something else, other than original to the car. So, I don't really know.
The cover diameter is 27-3/4, and the tread band width is 5-1/4.
So, I'm really of no help - this is simply what's on my car.

Note that the cover stainless band is not on the 'crown', and the wheel spokes do not show through, like the cover shown by Lawrie, above.

Both my 33 and 34 bands measure 5.75 inches in width which makes sense as the the tire is 17 by 5.5

BobH,

Judging from your photos, the outer band looks like it's a '33, but the face plate, excluding the hub cap, which is a '34, looks to be from a make of car other than Ford. At first glance the face plate looks like its from a '36 Ford, but the placement of the stainless moulding and the degree of outward protrusion of the center of the face plate rule out that possibility. To me the shape of the face plate is reminiscent of Chrysler product tire covers of the period.

I was thinking BobH cover was a woody face plate , but after checking a bit further I ruled it out. Has any body got a 33 outer band( tread cover ) they would like to sell? I have a wanted post as well. Thanks Dan.

bobH, I have seen at least two 33 ford sedans in Australia with that exact same fully enclosed spare wheel cover rear mounted. One car in particular was two tone green paint (original one owner) which was burnt out later in a big bush fire along with other cars. I have old colour slides of this car (sorry cant post them) which show that cover. Always thought these covers were a 1933 genuine ford fitment. Regards, Kevin.

Not trying to further muddy the waters but I also have a " 33 " looking outer band that is 5 3/4" wide . I kinda assumed it was non-ford as it is wearing it's gennie dark blue paint ??!!?? . NORMAL for 33 was the covers were all black .
