valve sticking

my friends model A's and other Fords are having problems with valves sticking..anyone have answers..is it fuel type or is there a additive you can put in to fix it...thanks

mmo as mentioned in the other post is perfect for that problem, also use a high detergent oil such as havolene 30 or 40w, I like 20 50 myself, that's what I run in all of my classic cars, all 4 of them

Most often caused by VARNISH deposits, pop off the manifolds, flush stem/guide, with BERRYMANS' CHEMTOOL, follow up with penetrating oil.

Marvel mystery oil did not help, we are now running 100 LL airplane fuel in all cars because ethanol melts tank treatments...maybe the fuel is too clean??

MMO should do it. It worked for me on an air cooled VW with a fresh engine. You can add more. MMO acts like or has solvent capabilities.
Aircraft fuel is very expensive, I would explore options.

MMOil I go glug glug glug before I put 5$ in. That much doesn't cause smoke and runs good on the "crap" gas. FWIW

You can't find non-ethanal in your area ? Many stations sell it in their high octane fuel. Marina's also sell it, its more expensive.

If you don't like the MMO, then you could try AFT or Sea-Foam.

hey Lopez, mmo wont fix the problem in a few miles, you will have to put a 100 miles or so on the engine. a sticking valve can be caused by the valve with a bunch of varnish on the valve stem, or a slightly bent valve stem, or even the lifter it self sticking, thus the reason for the high detergent oil and the mmo used together, mmo says 4 oz to ten gallons of gas, but you can go to 14 or 15 oz to ten gallons with out any problems, the engine has to be run at operating temp for at least 30 min or longer, when you change oil add one qt of mmo to your oil, just take out one qt of the oil needed for the change and replace it with mmo, since mmo it thinner than the oil most use just go a grade thicker, like use 40w oil instead of 30 weight, and so on, just use a heaver oil ,im going to get a lot of negative repiies because I said to use mmo, but that's ok, I know it works, been using it for over 50 years

Sea Foam. You can add it to your gas and oil so you can attack your sticky valve from BOTH sides...

Try a smokeless 2-cycle oil in the gas. Up to 20:1 is possible.

MMO wil fix it over night.

A old push style oil can with a small hose to slide over the spout, with a 3/16 hole in it.

Start the car and let it run at fast idle, and stick the little hose in the carb, and turn open the oil can top just so the carb will suck some oil in the motor, and when it really smokes, shut the engine off and leave it set.

That has always done it for me.

Putting it in the gas is all right, but takes to long.

I own two antique airplanes. 100LL avgas is the worst thing you could use if you have valve sticking. I do not even use it in my 7.5:1 compression ratio aircraft engines because of valve sticking.
There is way more lead in that then was ever in leaded auto-fuel.
Ream the carbon out of the valve guides and use MMO in the engine oil or CAMGARD. http://www.aslcamguard.com/

A can of Sea-Foam in the gas and another can in the oil. It could be a quick easy fix. Also try spraying the valve stem under the valve head by removing the spark plug.

Seafoam in my gas and oil... Along with a thermostat has help.... Less little sounds... You'll see a lot of gook when you drain your seaform/oil mix., oh and if you can find it 100% gasoline... I'm done with corn laced gas...

100LL is the BEST gas you can put in just about any engine these days. It has 4cc of lead per gallon.
Lead was added in the old days to up octane ratings BUT, it is also an EXCELLENT high temperature lubricant for valve stems/guides.
IF YOUR VALVES ARE STICKING, THEY ARE SETUP TOO TIGHT.

MMO may or may not allieviate the problem depending on how tight they are.
