Default Front brake question

Even though our '29 Tudor would brake adequately, my husband decided to give adjusting the brakes a try. The fact that both clevis arms were not at the 15 deg. forward position was bothering him. Both actually were about 15 deg. aft.
In preparation for this we ordered new operating pins and a package of shims (pills).
He decided to start on the RF wheel. After installing the new operating pin and one shim, the clevis arm would just come forward to the 12 o'clock position.
It would seem we have wear in another component. We think either the horizontal operating shaft or the wedge where the pin fits.

Which is most likely to wear?

I suppose we could try new wedges first; less expensive and easier to install.
(The old operating pin was about 1/16" short of spec.)

Snyders sell the right length pins. Just installed a set and my levers are all the way to the front. And, no "pills."

I've never seen a bad wedge.

Bought the pins and shims from Snyder's. Pins are 7-1/4" length. No problem there.

The recess in the wedge were the pin fits measures 0.346" deep. We have no idea what the tolerance for this would be. Sound OK?

Just went through that on my CCPU. One thing led to another. Bottom line tracks were worn. This is not an easy fix. We had to remove, weld them back up and then mill them to org. spec. I was lucky a club member has a complete shop with lathes, presses and a mill machine.

Now I have rebuilt completely in front with cast iron drums. Next this fall we are going after the rears....

What ever you do not cut corners on brakes!

is your car jacked up under the axle or frame ?
did you remove the brake rod clevis pin to make sure the lever is in a relaxed position?

Mitch, supported under both axles; all 4 wheels off the ground.
Yes, the pin is removed from the clevis arm where the brake rod attaches.
We've discovered some play where the clevis arm is attaches to the horizontal operating shaft. Elongated holes. There is a 1/4" diameter bolt in there now. We're considering drilling that out to 7mm, if we can find a 7mm bolt at TSC.

I usually have better luck finding metric oddities at ACE hardware..

That should be a pin not a 1/4" bolt.

Yes, there should have been a pin. A bolt is what was there.

Elongated holes in the clevises can be reamed out to 5/32 and oversize pins installed.

I needed to put two shims in mine to get the arm 15° forward..

And I also welded the front roller tracks and ground them with a dremel....
