Default 1951 Ford Sedan Serial Number / Title Question

Hi Everyone! I recently acquired a 1951 Tudor Sedan and in my excitement was not diligent about checking the title. As I was getting all the paperwork together to register I noticed the VIN on title does not match any numbers I've found on the car, but also the number seems to be gibberish for any 1951 Ford. I'm hoping the gibberish number format might sound familiar to someone?

The serial numbers on the plate on the firewall and on the pass side frame extension match each other and start with B1DAxxxxxx. This number makes sense and is what I would expect to see on the title, but that's not what's on the title.

There is also a number stamped on the cowl, from my understanding that number contains production/assembly information. That number also does not match the title.

It's an Indiana title and the "vin" listed on it starts 60FGAA and is 12 digits long. It does not have more than two consecutive numbers in it. It lists the vehicle as a 1951 Ford and the type as "2S", which I'm guessing is 2-door sedan. All that sounds good. But this vin/serial makes no sense. Does this format of number sound familiar to anyone, are there anymore numbers on the car I can look for? Does anyone know if indiana assigns a new VIN to vehicles that might be salvage or bonded?

I can file for a bonded title for the car, but I would like to figure out if this title belongs to the vehicle or not before I go down that path. Unfortunately I live far away from Indiana so an in-person DMV visit is not possible, but I will try calling their DMV.

Any ideas on what this 60FGAA number is?

Thanks!

You can send the question via e-mail from the Indiana BMV website, mybmv.com. They got back with me in a couple of days. Good luck.

Welcome to the Barn.

When states issue a new VIN number to a vehicle they generally put it in the left side door jamb below the top hinge. It is a metal plate and affixed by special head rivets. Did you check that area for a number?
