I had forgotten all about the FMX . That was a far better trans than people would give credit for . Very strong too . Well why not a 3 speed w/overdrive or even a good rebuilt Ford O Matic ? There are endless transmissions that can be bolted up to your Y block . You can even get a Chevy trans to bolt up if you are that crazy !

Now I am a die hard Ford guy so please don't throw anything at me for saying something about bolting Chevy trans to a Ford engine
I was just explaining all the options .

Personally I would either go with a C4 because they are easy to find , cheap and very durable or an AOD for the overdrive . If you don't really need the overdrive then go with the C4 !

I've got a C4 with the adapter from Mummert. Works good.
