Default Horn Hardware Change?

I was disassembling the 5 horns that have been taking up shelf space waiting to be rebuilt. On the two Spartons and two of the SW's the flange nuts took a 7/16" wrench. But on the other SW the nuts took a 3/8" wrench. Was there a hardware change somewhere along the way or did someone in the distant past make a substitute? I read the JS and seen no mention of any change. Alittle input is apriciated. Thanks Rod

Rowdy,

I believe the Standards are correct. Probable someone in the past rebuilt the horn and installed a new set of bolts and nuts ?

My October 1, 1929 Parts Price List calls for the 3/8" nuts and they are painted black enamel.

I'd have to look up the other dates for the Parts Price Lists to see if they changed size.

Thanks Tom. This horn is the one that came with the donor fordoor that I am using the chassis for the delivery sedan. The numbers are April 1929 and the car was a one family car with 67,000 miles. The horn did not show any signs of ever being apart. Rod

This needs more research because I think I've come across both sizes for the nuts also.

According to Brattons catalog, Sparton and stewart warner used 7/16 nuts, Ames and GMI used 3/8

Speaking of Ames horns, one of the Sparon horns had an Ames mounting bracket. So far Ames is the only brackets I have seen that had their logo on them. Rod

Talking horns, I have a horn the cover says Sparton the flange has sparton stamped into it however the tag is not like a the sparton tags ive seen shorter wider grey with a letter and a # stamped into it. any other writing is gone. Under the back cover looks just like a sparton.I did get this from a old time model A guy that said it is a sparton. Any ideas ?? Thanks CAPE A

Thanks DJ. I do not yet have the 2011 version of the JS. Been paying too many med bills to even considering a non-esential item. I bought some hard to find parts for the hotrod, but atleast got back to even with the purchase by selling the things in the pile that I did not need. Maybe next year I can get back to working on the delivery and will buy the newer JS. Rod

Thanks DJ. I was heavy into reading hard text that I don't even think I seen the chart.

Also when ordering parts today I noticed that Ames horns take different brushes. Not listed in the parts book. Where does one buy brushes for the Ames, a friend of mine needs a set. I have not looked at the A&L parts list yet. Thanks Rod

I hope you are right as I now own the horn. He wanted a working horn for the car show this weekend. He traded it to me this morning for the SW that I had for the delivery and some cash as long as the S W was done by tomorrow evening. I will measure the brush thickness and see if it is slightly smaller than the brushes for the other horns. If it is smaller I will file down a set for it. If they are larger than I will cut some to fit from my stockpile of unidentied brushes. I have a Klaxon I need to make brushes for any way. Also another possible solution is to change the brush holders to the ones currently sold. Rod
