Default Sealing the rear main when using Brass replacement thrust surface.

How have you guys sealed the rear main when you have used a brass thrust surface with a crank shaft where the oil slinger has been machined off. I have had a engine recently rebuilt using the brass thrust surface and a balanced crank with the oil slinger machined off. It is leaking horribly, so bad you don't dare drive it anywhere. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks "A" Restorations.

What kind of seal did they install, since they cut the slinger?

Some guys have had success with a seal PROPERLY installed, but I still prefer the original slinger.
AER and James Rogers can replaced the slinger by building it back up and machining it.

Why on earth did they remove the slinger????
As Bill said, it can be replaced and unless they had a good reason to remove it, I'd be expecting them to pay for its replacement.

They may have taken too much off the crank when the slinger was removed, the diameter is too small for the seal used or it could be as simple as the oil tube was not installed. Tom at Model A Ford Works in Portland Or has done a number of this type setups and has encountered this issue in the past, someone cutting off too much from the crank.

'recently rebuilt'
Have you got a warranty and what does the rebuilder have to say regarding your engine problem ?

If you know or can get the information, it might help to know what type/method of seal that the rebuilder used.
If this rebuilder has/had experience with removing slinger from crank and installing a modern seal , i.e.- Burtz one piece or Chev two piece or, I'd ask what seal/method was used when he installed the BRASS thrust ?

Conversely, if rebuilder has/had no previous experience with this type sealing situation...best of luck to you.

The rebuilder has had no experience with this before, it was a crank that was given to me that was in excellent condition and balanced, so I wanted to use it. however it leaks badly , that is why I am asking for suggestions or other experiences that might help my rebuilder do it better when he repairs it. I am aware of a modern seal sold by Snyders but have no experience with it. I have also reah where folks use an early Chevy rope seal. Since I don't have a lot of experience in this area I am looking for folks that do have. Thanks "A" Restorations
