Re: magneto ? when looking
I think to test the magneto for putting out the proper power it should be running but to just see if it is working, I guess you could put a meter on the magneto post or out on the firewall and see if you get anything when cranking by hand but I have never done this. Might be good to play with one that you know is working then duplicate the test on the unknown one in the field.

Re: magneto ? when looking
I have hand cranked my motor with a wire laying from the mag post to the frame. A spark occurs and a moderate speed that can be seen. Certainly don't ever touch the mag post with battery current.

Re: magneto ? when looking
Chances of getting a spark or feeling anything is about nill. At best you are only generating very low volts AC when hand cranking. More then likely you would need to replace the winding's anyway as the insulating is old and comes off.
I would use the meter set to AC and with the plugs out and someone else looking at the meter spin the motor and see what you get. Point to remember; the T magneto is an AC generator with 16 magnets and 16 pole's. It does not create a steady output. The meter needle should pulse as each magnet passes a pole. Re: magneto ? when looking
When you get the car running on battery, you can do this magneto test to find out how good (or bad) your mag is:

Check with Bob Bergstadt (Bob's Antique Auto Parts) just down the road from you in Loves Park. He may know somebody local who can help.

Re: magneto ? when looking
If for whatever reason your magneto needs work, it can be charged with the engine in place in the car, but at best you will get it up to maybe 75% of full charge. To effect any repairs to the components, or to charge the magnets to 100% of their capacity, the engine needs to be removed, and the oil pan and transmission taken off to get at the magneto magnets and coil ring. Mostly labor involved here, some parts, all depends on the problem with the magneto.
I can do all of this for you, I live in Burlington, IL. But I charge $60/hour, just so you know. |
