Default Voltage Regulator

Can I use a regulator of a higher amp rating on my 6 volt 55 Crown. The car had a 40 amp originally and I would like to replace it with a 50 amp nos one I got. The original one is not functioning properly, that's why it needs replacing.

Can't think back that far without hurting myself, but welcome to the site.

Voltage regulators are interchangeable and what you want to do is OK.
They operate on voltage not amperage.
You may need to set it though. It is a case of suck it and see!
You say the old one is not working properly, it probably just needs cleaning up and resetting also. The springs on the contacts do give way after a while - 55 years isn't bad though.
