Re: Plating
No matter who you choose, I suggest that you lay the parts in groups, take a pic of each one, provide a brief description for each. That will provide the plater a reference to get all your parts back to you.

Re: Plating
A plater I've done repeat business with over the past 20 years is in Villa Park, Ill. called Courtesy Metal Polishing. He's done small and large "anything" parts, die cast, etc...They accept and ship back out of state parcels all the time, prices are OK, turnaround time is usually very quick. He plates my antique jukebox and slot machine parts for me, also some Model A parts- bumper bars. P.S.- do not use South Shore Plating in Quincy Ma. for any die cast parts. You'll be searching for new ones after the fact.

Re: Plating
I used to take in a bucket of motorcycle hardware for cad plating too.I always ran it through the valve tumbler first,so it was pretty clean when I handed it over to him.A few years ago the plater told me that he was no longer going to do cad plating in what would be acceptable for most restoration work.He was going to stay geared up with whatever his commercial customers spec'ed for him.He would still do it for us little guys, but the finish would be whatever the solar panel mount people called for on their 30,000 mounts he was doing at the time.

Re: Plating
I’ve got a local guy that does really nice work. Mail your parts to me, I’ll get them done for you and mail them back to you. I don’t mind helping you out if you’re in a pinch. Send me a private message if interested and I can get a price for you from him.
On another note, I’ve tinkered with DIY plating and was not very satisfied with my results. I got a lot of yellowing. I think I need to fine tune my settings and setup, and practice a bit more. It’s certainly not a perfect-the-first-time thing. |

Re: Plating
As a plater of over twenty years here's my input:
-If it is a un-replaceable part that you just must have...by all means have it plated -If it is a common item...buy a new one -If you are strapped for cash...paint it -If you just want to drive and have fun...use as is -And if you live in the peoples republic of Calif. or New York...forget it Plating prices have gone up higher then eggs and meat

Re: Plating
Just heard the past few days that the state of California is going to propose banning chrome plating in the not too distant future, citing air quality issues. This will go hand in hand with banning all sales of any new gas appliances by 2030.

They have chased most of them out years ago. This is just a small, but many reasons California is not at all the state it was 20,30, or 40 years ago. Closing the remaining few chrome plating shops will do nothing about air quality, climate change. Stupid moves from stupid people. This is not a political message. It's the absolute truth & facts going on here. From the state that demonizes tobacco use, and legalizes a narcotic substance! |

Re: Plating
I hear very good things (all the way from CA) about Swiss Plating in Troy, MI. 248/830.6066 Zach. For strictly chrome, Auto & Truck Bumpers, Inc in Hayward, CA seems to have a good reputation as well. 510/881.1886 David Gaitan.
