Re: One Fast Flathead
Rick Schnell's Blown flathead burning nitro methane fuel on an engine dyno is capable of making 900 Horsepower. RPM is 7000 at the 1320 1/4 mile mark. Block is filled with aluminum then the intake and exhaust ports are modified. The heads start as a solid block of aluminum then Rick machines the combustion chambers to work in the extreme environment burning nitro. Many years of development went into the Sliders engine to produce the power needed to run near 180 MPH in the quarter mile.

Re: One Fast Flathead
The only time I saw the car it made two runs that day. There's never really been any other competition to run against Ricks car so going rounds at an event wasn't done to my knowledge. Exhibition runs were more what the do when the car runs. On occasion when Rick was pushing the envelope if he experienced a lean out that always would cause a damaged piston and cylinder which at times meant another block would be needed. That would not be an easy job replacing the block considering the amount of work it takes to modify the blocks. Ronnieroadster

Re: One Fast Flathead
And after all that he is still leaving a LOT of power on the table.
If he were to pursue it, who would he race? He is in no man's land. Too fast for vintage and too slow for NHRA. |

Re: One Fast Flathead
What did Flathead Jack’s twin engine Flathead dragster run? I’ve never seen any times for it. It was a beautifully turned out piece. Does it still exist I wonder?

Re: One Fast Flathead
Curious about your opening sentence. What more do you think could be done to make it go faster, Pete?

Re: One Fast Flathead
Oh, I forgot to mention the next "up" blower would be a centrifugal.
More out for less in. |
