Default Boot lid

Grasping at straws, I`ve searched online for all the articles, read and re-read them but I`m getting nowhere. Just hoping someone can come up with something to relieve me of my misery. Getting the car ready for a respray and thought I`d better get the boot lid fitting better than it was when I got it before the new paint goes on. To me it looks like it don`t belong with the car but how good a fit are they in general. The curve of the lid doesn`t quite match the curve of the wings too well and there is quite a gap around it. It looks like it has been converted from a standard trunk and a rumble fitted.
I`ve spent ages adjusting the hinge bolts trying to get it right but to no avail, yet when I remove the bolts and just place the lid in position it don`t look to bad.

Are you using reproduction rubber bumpers? If so, They are too thick and won't allow the lid to close properly. Also, they only go on the bottom, not the top, where they are used for thr rumble seat version. If you can post some pictures it would help.

Trunk/rumble lids always seem to have a little TOO much, side to side "bulge", but that's the way they ARE!

It takes lots of fiddling. I had to weld on a strip on the bottom of my 29 roadster rumble lid to get the best fit. Still not perfect. I fiddled with my rumble lid for weeks!

Here are some pics, I didn`t make it clear, it has a rumble fitted, at the top the rubber bumpers look quite new but the lid only touches the bumper on one side but I can`t get it level.

Hi Dennis,

Trunk and rumble lids have the same contour.

The gaps between the lid and the body sides in my Coupe are approximately 4.8mm.

Go to Bratton's website or his catalog and see Part Numbers 29820 and 29830. These parts center the lib between the body sides.

The rubber bumpers, Part Number 29850, generally need to be shaved down in thickness, sometimes more on one side than the other.

A rumble lid often requires adding shims to the rubber stops (Bratton's 29750) to keep the lid from contacting the rear body panel below the lid.

Good luck. It is a difficult task fitting the lid.

thanks for the info Bob, managed to get the parts you listed locally, at risk of sounding stupid I can't see how they fit, not the shims the other bits

Dennis,..
If the hinges are not original,...it makes the boot lid fit incorrectly. To me, they look
like repops. Check the back side for a Ford part number...

Is this the bumper you are trying to identify?

I can`t see any numbers on the hinges.
The parts I can`t figure out how they are the top and bottom alignment plates.
If the hinges and the brackets are repo`s and causing my problem where can I get the proper ones.

It took me months to slowly improve the fit on my cabriolet lid. The hinges, latch and bumpers all needed to be fiddled with and I even tried some shrinking on the inner panel to get a better curvature. It was not an original piece, and forgive me, I was converting the rumble to a trunk.

I feel that it is best done as an iterative process. Get an initial fit of everything, then make small adjustments of each component to slowly work to a better fit. Get an extra latch and rubber bumper set in case you go too far. Mine is okay now, but I am waiting until paint and final assembly to make additional minor rubber and latch adjustments. My lid fit is still a little "fat" on the right edge, but a tighter latch will pull it down to where I am satisfied with the fit.

Okay,...first photo, this bracket is original, it has the checker board pattern
that matches the square washers, for shimming.

Next photo,..the hinge. Note the part# on the inside(hidden when screwed
down on lid). Also, note that the screw holes are centered on the bracket, were as your's are not centered. Go to the top of the page and do a "search" for "rumble hinges" and start studying..

Took a couple more pics after doing a search for rumble hinges because I`ve seen a few more differences between my car and others. The uprights that hold the hinge brackets are creased, didn`t give it a thought before but doesn`t appear to affect anything ? trouble I have is not having another physical car to compare, I have to rely on pics. It does seem that my hinges are repo`s but I doubt if I can get hold of any original. I`ve now removed the lock and again I have a difference in that the handle is held by a small screw in the end of the spindle, the threaded part doesn't extend thru.
