Default ford-o-matic to cruise-o-matic

So with any luck I will pick up a cruise-o-matic to replace my ford-o-matic in my Model A with a Y block saturday. I understand I will have to use the Y block bell housing and converter, also swapping the front pump. The cruise-o-matic came from behind a FE motor. Anything else? The cruise-o-matic is a '65 model, can I use the Ford-o-matic throttle valve linkage? Does the '65 cruise-o-matic have a vacume modulater?

Or find a C-O-M from behind a Y-Block.

I have a flat-o-matic conversion set up in my model A that adapts a C-4 trans to the Y-Block. the C-4 is smaller and lighter and easier to squeeze into the already tight space in a model A. I think the conversion kit runs about $600 with out the trans. I could be wrong about the price.

thanks but I'm trying to stay with parts that came out in the '50s so the c4 would be too new.

yes, that would be the thing to do, find a c-o-m that came out of a Y block car but that is getting harder to do, I found this for $50

youll see what your up against when you get it.the cruseomatic input shaft will have what they call a fine spline with i think 27 teeth while all the early foromatics will have something like 17.if thats the case you cant use your converter.youll know when you get it.

So can I swap the input shafts? use the ford-o-matic input shaft in the cruise-o-matic transmission?

Yes, use the input shaft and front pump from the FOM. It will require a complete teardown of both transmissions to complete the swap. John

You will be there anyway when you swap the front pump. What is the reason to swap the pumps, by the way?

Thanks Hoosier! Just what I needed to know.

If anyone can offer any more info like the front pump question, it would be great to know ...... but I guess I will find out any difference with the pumps when I get into it.
Thanks again.

The front pump has to be swapped because the shafts are different diameters. There will be no support for the converter turbine if you use the large diameter pump with the small shaft. Swapping the pump and shaft will permit you to use your existing converter. To answer Darrell's question, yes the Merc fine spline converter will fit the COM. John

YES! I ran into the fromt pump thing (now I remember) when I was looking for a seal for the ford-o, they are different sizes.
Thanks again,
Tom
