Default Which New Cam,,,330 or 340

I'm getting my engine rebuild by Antique Engine Rebuilder, and Rich say he can provide the .330 lift cam or the .340 Stipe cam. What should one expect out of the two, any real differences, does updraft or down draft carb. make any differences in proformance with either of the cams ????

Which 340 Stipe cam? The IB340 or the RR340?

The IB330 is like a modernized A profile. The Stipe IB340 is like a modernized B profile (aka:"touring cam") but will run on stock diameter original or double lock lifters, unlike an original B cam. Then there is the Stipe Road runner series. The RR340 (not to be confused with his IB340) is for a more aggressively modified motor- HC head, big intake valves, more than a stock Zenith intake.

Actually Bill doesn't make any new cams similar to the "A". The B 330 is his improvement on the "B" profile. For the basic 340 Bill says:

" 340Touring cam has excellent torque 1600 to 3000 RPM range. Best run with larger intake valves and Weber carb & 6 or 7 to1 C.R. Head."

I have the IB330 cam with big intake valves and 5.5 head,Zenith. I used this engine with a reground touring cam for a while and when I added the 330 it made a big difference in hill climbing and speed aginst the wind when I drove out west.It was noticeably better in overdrive as it is a torque cam,not high rpm.

I recently put on an English Stromberg 97 and it runs smoother and has more power. I highly reccomend the 330 for a stock Zenith or downdraft. The cam definitly adds more than a downdraft carb by itself, and then you can add that later if you wish.

Thanks, Marco! This was also my understanding.

I have a cam in my S/W Town Sedan right now (heavy car) that begins to build torque at about 1600 RPM. It is not an IB340, but it sounds like it has roughly the same torque curve. I also have large valves, HC head, balanced crank.

I don't like the way this cam forces me to wind the engine to about 2200 RPM before shifting. If I don't, then when I go into the next higher gear, the engine is below 1600 RPM and it does not have good torque until I slowly accelerate up through 1600 again. On the plus side, it really wakes up at around 2000 RPM! I can run in O/D at 2000 RPM (50 MPH) all day long.

The next time I have an excuse to open the engine up, it will be getting an IB330.

Again, WHICH 340? Stipe IB340 or Stipe RR340?

When I asked Rich the "330 or 340" question a couple of months ago, I got this reply:

"Hi Joe
330 for updraft carb and 340 for down draft carb."

No mention of whether that's IB340 or RR340. I will be double-checking on this before I send my engine after the turn of the year. My block already has large valves and a bit of intake porting. I will run a B carb on a bored A manifold, and I'll be getting whatever Snyder head Rich has at the time. I already have a nearly new IB330 cam, but would spring for an IB340 if it seems appropriate.

I have the IB 330 in my tudor and it runs great. I talked to Bill Stipe and he said unless you are using a bigger carb, intake valves, and high compression head, use the 330, as the 340 is for use with those performance items.

That's the same advice I got before I bought my 330. I do have a Weber carb, and a 5.5 Snyder head, but standard valves with the single nut lifters.

Does the IB340 change the engine's idle smoothness much, compared to the IB330?

Can you idle it down to a nice low RPM?

i feel it best to give Bill Stipe a call. The little I think I know about these camshafts is that the number stands for the lift[ that is if I remember correctly]. If I remember correctly the original 'A' cam has about .285" lift while the 'B' has about .300" lift so the Stipe cams have significantly more lift. I don't remember the duration of the originals and do not know that of the Stipe's.

The "A" cam was .302" lift at the lobe, .289"-.292" at the valve. The "B" intake was .334" at the lobe and .321"-324" at the valve.
