Default removing water pump studs

Man I really like the idea of having bolts to hold the water pump on. The "new" fake bolts that look like studs are the trick for me!
PROBLEM IS: I got the pump off but could only remove two studs. I used two nuts on the stud, locked them together very tight and wrenched on the inside nut. This worked on two but not the other two. I used open end wrench then vicegrip to the point I was afraid of breaking one off. Fearing that and the idea of drilling our a broken stud, I stopped and put the pump back on.

Well, now I want to try again but need some real tried and tested and true technique to help my confidence and do the job fully this time.

What worked for you?? Details please!!

Many thanks, James Gregory

The two nut technique has always worked for me. If you have heat that would be next.

The way I did it was a bit abusive to the tools.
I clamped vice grips on as tight as I possibly could, repeatedly until I knew they were on pretty solid, I then beat the hell out of them with a hammer. The shock was able to break all 4 studs loose. I seem to recall the top left stud being drilled \ tapped into the water jacket so it can't hurt to put some silicone on the threads of that bolt.

You can warm the area good with a propane torch & spray some Liquid Wrench on it & hit the stud a bit & it should come off.L W works better than WD40.

These are very good tools for removing studs ... these may not be the right size, just an example. Other companies have similar ones for less money.

They are the best type for for engine studs, better than the "offset" type that bends studs.

Hi! Jim This method worked for me, I heated up the studs one at a time with a acetylene jorch until they are just cherry red then pour over them 2 cups of ice cold water this action will allow you to turn them out easily instead of using a "24" p1pe wrench" It will loosen OK

Always a little heat sometimes you need to do it a couple of times over a couple of days to let them break loose. Force never works.....you end up with two piece studs.
And PB Blaster is goooooood stuff.

I normally go with double nuts and smack it to break any rust bind and that's it. Vice grips next and after that either heat it, or weld the nut to the stud, and the heat from welding the nut will allow it to come out.
