Oil ring install
Starting to reassemble the engine and upper oil ring has 4 pieces but when I put them on the rings don't want to compress due to the inner piece holding them out

Re: Oil ring install
Maybe there is such a thing but the only ones that I have used have 3 pieces. One spreader and two scrapers. Picture might help.

( Not too relevant: Ford made 3 and 4 ring pistons. Not Ford pistons ? Ford Manual indicates in both 3 and 4 ring pistons, one could have a 2 piece or 4 piece oil control ring assembly. In the 4 ring piston, the upper 2 rings were compression rings, the 3rd ring set contained an oil control ring, expander ring and two steel sections; the 4th ring was a single-piece oil control ring. Some replacement sets contain a bottom compression ring and some choose to omit that to reduce overall piston friction. ) |

Re: Oil ring install
Bob C .... if that's the complete ring set in your photo, looks like for a 6 cyl with 3-ring pistons (?)

Re: Oil ring install
One thing I learned the hard way about the 3 part expander type oil control rings is that they resist compressing them a lot. You really have to have a good ring compressor set up to get them in. Resist the temptation to "shorten" the expander. Most of them are designed to work as is as long as it is the correct diameter for the bore. I've no experience with McHenry rings but generally it's best to talk to the ring manufacturer about installation unless they are no longer in business.

Re: Oil ring install
I have used that type ring. You must be carful installing them in the groove not to overlap either the expander ring or the spacer ring. Most have the ends of the rings painted to help eliminate this problem. If the ring ends overlap you wil not be able to install the piston assy in the cylinder without great difficulty, and if you do the outcome will not be good. Check and check again and again!

Re: Oil ring install
You could walk into any good machine shop and buy rings for that engine as they are still in most catalogues. Sealed power,Grant ,Hastings,Egge. All will be current inventory.Easy to get. Napa, Autovalue,Parts plus Lordco and more.
