Default Air filter

I have '30 Model A without a air filter. What should I put on it and will it effect the carb balance.

If you have engine pans installed, there is not a air filter recommend. If you add a air filter, it will have a negative effect on your fuel / air mixture. The carburetor will need rejetting

Both of my cars came with the Air Maze filters. I would not recommend them. They restrict air flow, can become saturated with gas and be a fire hazard. I replaced both with the Hi Boy Air filter, using K&N filters. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hi-Boy-Air-F...9dd88d&vxp=mtr

Many say an air filter is not needed. Air filters became standard on engines for a reason. Yes, you might need to adjust the carb. Last weekend I had the carb adjusted on my roadster without the filter. I put the filter back on with no noticeable change in the way the car ran.

I just installed a K & N air filter and runs the same as before without any adjustments. My car has the pans. Since we have wind every day here in South Texas near the coast there is a lot of dirt & dust in the air due to all the agriculture.

I've run air-maze and filters with no issues. But, then, I also use 6 volts, generator, in-line fuel filter and a modern upper plate with no issues. I'm lucky I guess.

Some like them, some do not, kind of like asking about what type of oil you should use.
For me I use one and have no issues.

I use a " highboy" style with no problems. I drive on a lot of gravel roads, so I don't consider it an option

I have not had one for years, when I first got my A it had one and had problems with it ,it would run rich and would catch gas sometimes from carb. overflow. Runs great without one.......

do a search and read all the posts. This has been rehashed several times and there are those who do and those who do not run filters.

I have an original aftermarket AirMaze on mine and it does not adversely affect the performance. I drive on lots of gravel roads and any filtering is better than none.

I remember when I was a 16 year old kid and took my first car , a real "bomb", to the neighborhood Sinclair station to buy a dollars worth of gas, the station owner, Mr. Roach (aka "Cocky") lambasted me for not having an air filter on the car. I have always run one since then.

On my Model A, I run an easily detachable air maze (a wire and spring mechanism connected to the air maze which stretches to the the bottom carburetor bolt to hold all in place). This is so I can remove the outer dirty filter material and easily change it.

I wrap a common air-conditioner vent filter (Lowes) around the air maze screen and secure it by wrapping chicken or cage wire around it with a final two wire wrap (coat hanger wire clipped to fit and connect) to hold the chicken wire to the vent filter.

The vent filter material appears fire proof but don't hold me to this. It doesn't take long for the filter to dirty up so I know its doing its job. When testing for air restriction, I didn't notice any difference in performance with or without the air fllter --- Tillotson X carb.

I too, use the highboy, and I have no evidence that it restricts air flow.
It is a pricey solution, but it was right for me.

If you run a paper filter below the carb inlet, it will get wet with gas and a backfire could cause big problems. At least the air maze dries out.

I run air maze with paper filters on both Model As, no problems.

I like them because I just take it off for judging, then reinstall for driving. Cars drive exactly the same with it on or off. Difference is the motor will last longer, and the car is noticeably quieter with the air filter installed.

The only time I have noticed a difference in carburation is when the filter gets dirty. If you keep a clean filter on it, you don't need to worry about it changing your carb mixture.

I run Zenith carbs rebuilt by Bert's on both.
