Which way to install manifold gaskets???
Attached is a picture of a two piece copper manifold gasket. The top one shows a wider ring around the hole while the lower one has the narrow ring. Which side goes against the block? Please help this guy that knows nothing about what he is doing. Thanks

Re: Which way to install manifold gaskets???
If the ring is on both sides it makes no difference. If the ring is on one side it seems common practice is to place the ring away from the block.

I agree with Mike V. At least that is the way I install them.

Re: Which way to install manifold gaskets???
From a practical point of view: Mic the ID of the block openings and the manifold openings. One set usually has a little larger ID than the other. To get the best seal, place the gasket with the larger ring bearing surface against the largest opening. Ideally, you would port the openings to match to maximize smooth flow.

Re: Which way to install manifold gaskets???
Thanks again guys. Got it installed and after getting an exhaust hookup leak at the manifold fixed, the job was finished. Could not find any leaks after getting it installed around the intake ports.
But is still has not solved my problem with a random miss while idling. So back to the drawing boards on that problem. Think it sounds to me like an electrical problems. Just a guess from a guy that knows little about this sort of thing. So I think the next step is to change out the distributor with an extra one I have that I know is good. Anyway, thanks again guys.
