Default I can see clearly now

Would you believe I rubbed the paint off and the opacity went with it?

(This should be better than safety chrome)

Fun device.

So what have you learned from it?

Nothing, yet. Just finished making it and got the dinner call. Had a meeting so playing with it will have to be over the weekend.
Should be fun to watch the valves.

I wonder if it will stay clear enough to see inside? The oil mist might cloud it over, but watch the front as soon as the engine starts, to see how much oil flows onto the timing gears.

Set up your cellphone/video to record at startup.

I got one of those. Played with it couple of times. Fun to watch the oil come squirting in for about the first ten seconds. By then the wall is so oily that the view was obliterated. Then all the fun was gone. Wish I had a way to video it - then I would try again. ken

Perhaps a pair of tiny windshield wipers to clear the running view?

Not quite as fancy, but I took a beat-up oil return tube and cut a 3" section out of it and slipped some 3/4" ID clear tubing from Home Depot in to fill the gap. Added two hose clamps, and I had a way to see oil flow on start-up of a fresh rebuild. I was just looking to get a sense of how long before I had oil flow after start-up, without making a big oily mess. Worked great.

Well........ not much oil flowing.......even at fast idle

https://youtu.be/8Urtmsg8f10

clean pan, oil passages are clear and pump is good.

Here's a video of the initial cranking to watch oil flow at cranking speed. (ignition is off)

Interesting the pocket of oil immediately to the right of the baffle. I always assumed the level of the oil for the whole chamber was set by the weir at the timing gear.

That oil pipe MUST do something.

Now maybe a cover WITHOUT an oil pipe connection - so you can see what the experimental engines of July 1929 (what, like 2800 of them?) had in their favor/non-favor?

(Gosh. I hear the sound and I want to go start my Model A up. Too bad. I'm working in Louisiana)

I made the clear side cover to be able to see into the oil/lifter galley while the motor was running.

I am very surprised at the amount of oil that is NOT being pumped. After the engine had been running for almost 5 minutes the galley to the left had filled to the overflow pipe.

Yes, I do agree !........sure does look short on the flow. Was that at
idle?

I checked an engine by running it at idle with the side cover off and the oil flowing onto the timing gear was like Niagra Falls.
Do you have a clean screen on the oil pump?
Did you use gaskets on the oil pump gear cover if none should be there?
Do you have a good spring holding the pump tight to the block?

Tom,.....you got me thinking...
It could be the center main on the cam, with excessive clearance.

Was it just a novelty or were you trying to diagnose a problem ! Wayne
