Default Speed Head

I have a head that came on the bed of an AA I have. Only marking is 'speed head'. Looks to be in good condition. Is this early speed stuff that is desirable? I installed it with an unused but well handled head gasket the seller gave me, went out on a test drive, blew the gasket and my wife had to tow me home..... I am trying to sell some surplus stuff to fund my '47 tonner panel project. No idea how to price it in classifieds.

Do you have any pictures of the head?? If you post them here, people will be able to give you a better idea of what it is worth.

I don't know how many mod. A heads you've replaced, but it looks easy but it can be a big deal. First thing, did you check it for flatness? Next, Some don't, but I like permatex on both sides of the gasket. Then there's the torqueing and retorqueing sequence. Altogether, it gets torqued about 4-5 times. since I started doing it this way, I haven't had a leak or a blown gasket. BTW It sounds and looks like you were over heating. This is a good time to clean out and flush the block and radiator.

It was just the head that was sitting on the script stakebed when I bought the AA last year. There was no head on the engine at the time. I made sure it was clean, took the gasket he gave me and bolted it up, using a torque pattern that made sense from years of shade tree mechanicing. After it blew, I did some research about torqueing on fordbarn and got a different stock head and new gasket. Yes it overheats because the radiator is clogged, but the white smoke is from a wood fire in the pig roaster on back. I have it on the back burner waiting for a radiator. Maybe someone wants the speed head for a rad???
