How and where do you store the tools in a 1923 Touring?
I am trying to complete a set of tools (not necesarily with the absolutely correct marks but essentially the correct tools)... what you see in the pics is what I got right now, and an air pump, which is being restored right now and not in the pics.
I know that I am missing at least the oiler (the one I have there is not Ford and probably too small) plus the tire irons. Anything else is missing? Is my bag correct for a 1923? Where do you fit everything? Under the back seat, I assume... but with the jack or the pump clothed in something or just 'thrown' in there? Thanks! victor |

Looking good.
Yes, the tools go in the rear , under the seat. In fact there should be a cardboard sheet folded to cushion items under the seat in the pan. Here is a photo of items in the kit, this one is early 1924 but same tools. Also don't forget the Owners Manual and Parts and Price list, they were also included. And the tool bag was more of a 'roll'. Some facts below: On December 6, 1920 a new design. It is now more of a bag than a roll. Apparently two versions were being made; one had a snap button to keep the flap closed and the other used a web strap. The button type appears to be new as the strap had been used for some time. On June 5, 1924 a new drawing. The width went from 5 to 6 inches to 5-1/2 to 6-1/2 inches, and the length outside went from 16 to 17 inches to 12-1/2 to 13 inches. Glove fasteners were specified instead of the strap and buckle. |

Ditto on the above. I put the jack and tire pump in old pillow cases. Keeps things from banging around and makes it easy to lift them out. And another one for the other misc. things and spares I throw in.

Space under the seat is limited, and even more so in a roadster. A running board tool box is a good thing to have.

Thanks a lot for the information!
So, a folded piece of cardboard to cover the floors, and laying on them the air pump and the tool bag (I noticed I need to change for another style, thanks!) What about the oil can? Was it also placed in there? Also, what about the manual and list price mentioned? Where are they supposed to be stored? Thanks again! victor |

Don't know what the new dealer did to place these parts for the customer, likely put them on the rear floor board as the owner drove off the dealer's lot! Then the new owner put the oil can in the garage, and carried the booklets into the house. |

A popular accessory was the oil can holder, which mounted on the firewall or elsewhere in the engine compartment.

Thanks a lot for the pics! Very interesting information!
I just learned from one of them that I placed the rear mat in the opposite direction, with the Ford emblem readable from the back seat! I will have to turn it around. |

Re: How and where do you store the tools in a 1923 Touring?
Ok guys... bear with me. I always say that in most cases it takes almost the same effort to do things correctly or incorrectly...
I am going to do the cardboard for under the seat, as in the pic posted by tmodelman, above. I can see it is not the full width of the area under the seat but just the width of the depressed area where you store the tools... so it is pretty obvious and you can see in the pic that the sides of that depressed area do not get covered. What I cannot see and would like to ask is: Where does the cardboard ends at the front... on the bottom of the depressed area or does it come up the front wall? Where does it end in the rear, just at the back of the car/body curve? In my case, the battery (Optima, 6 volts) was moved to that area by the prior owner, so I need to find out where the original battery was placed and find a battery box to return it to where it should be. Thanks, victor |

Re: How and where do you store the tools in a 1923 Touring?
The battery is carried under the car in a battery bracket that is bolted to the frame rails, two bolts on the driver side, one bolt on the passenger side.
Original battery brackets can be found at swaps, or new ones are made. p/n5150A (Lang's Antique Auto Parts) $54. Original too is a metal battery box that fit into the frame, but you don't have to have this. Regular Group 1 6v storage battery fits in the bracket with a small bit of wood to rise it up a bit. The Optima battery will fit if you make a wood support for that little thing. Once you get the Optima out from under the seat you can see the construction of the rear seat storage area. That cardboard piece covers the entire floor of the storage area, from one side to the other, it has a fold to go up and over the metal cover of the rear spring area. Really simple to make, its just a rectangle of cardboard with 2 folds lengthwise. |

Re: How and where do you store the tools in a 1923 Touring?
Here is the end result. I bought a battery carrier and moved the battery to where it is intended, and then did the cardobard as described. I am hoping it is what was used...
Thanks for all the help! |
