B carburetor ???
Tried to post this tqwo days ago,but apparently my fingers don't do
what my weak brain tells it. Two B carburetorrre I am rebuilding. The GAV Needle in one slide in and Screws in Just like the Zenith 1 and 2's I have built. The second B carb, the needle goes in about 1/2 way and hits a spring of some kind. Cant see it - just feel it. The spring will compress about 3/16" and the Needle will not engage any threads in the hole. Not had much dealings with B carb and this puzzled me. What gives?? ken |

Re: B carburetor ???
The GAV housing on the B Zenith presses in, under the housing is a spring and a washer that keep the needle from self adjusting by putting pressure on the shoulder of the needle. Someone may have installed a longer spring in the one, or the threads are gone at the top of the GAV housing.

Re: B carburetor ???
The GAV Needle for the "B" is different than the Needle used in the Zenith and Holley "A" carbs. The "B" Needle is shorter .

Re: B carburetor ???
Ken, you had posted your query over on the Early V-8 Forum a few days ago and mine was the only response, as follows:
There shouldn't be a spring inside of the sleeve. There is a spring down below the end of GAV sleeve, inside the casting. This spring is placed in the casting before the GAV sleeve is pressed into place. The spring takes the place of the elongated "fingers" on the Model A GAV and functions the same way - to keep slight tension on the needle so it doesn't move by itself. With the spring properly in place the GAV needle should easily turn down all the way to engage with the fuel port in the casting. Of note is that Bratton's now supplies the Model-B GAV valve, if you need a replacement. It is very easy to bugger up the "B" GAV upon removal because it is a press fit in the casting. The needle valve and sleeve is also threaded for an odd size which I recall as 1/4-24, so if that needs work you'll need to find the odd tap or die. odd |
