Re: 1973 302 Timing Tape
And these are the answers I expected.....I've been to Summit and couldn't find a 6.5" tape. Have you guys got a part number? I don't.....See, I've been to other sites and this seems to be a common problem with several series of FORD engines with this same 6-1/2" damper. Now, does anyone have any real information? RooDog

there does not seem to be any commercially available EXACTLY for the 6.5. 10 degrees on a 6.5" balancer is 0.567" length on that balancer 10 degrees on a 6 3/8" is 0.556" length on that balancer We are looking at what, .0011 inches per degree difference? A human hair is about .001"

If you "GOTTA" HAVE IT, take the pulley off and have a machine shop cut degree marks to 'YOUR" satisfaction.

Many engines will run better when timed with a vacuum gauge. The exact degrees can vary from one engine to another. Its a trial and error thing.

Re: 1973 302 Timing Tape
I'm not being "snotty", I'm looking for the correct part for my engine. I have aslo looked at MSD and MrGaskets offerings and I know that the 6.375 tape will be close enough. . Now cone on guys, would you put a .020 piston in a .030 oven bore cause it was "close enough", no, I don't think so. I've spent time looking at other sites and the lack of 6.5 tape seems to be a common problem, if you care and want to do it right. Timing with a vac gage is just another method of getting an engine to run to your satisfaction, but is beside the point. No body seems to make the correct part for our FORD engine with that size damper. Y'all didn't fail me. ya chimed in with BS opinions and no facts LOL.....Once I establish/confirm TDC with a piston stop I will then add my own marks using a degree wheel and my trusty Dremel. Timing tape would have been easier and cheeper. It's not that it can't be done, but I just wanted a product to do the job easilly and quickley........I've spent more time here that It would have taken to add my own marks, anyway....Bless your hearts....RooDog

Re: 1973 302 Timing Tape
I can do that. But the question was who has the correct tape for a 6.5 damper, nothing more and certainly nothing less. How hard is that to understand?.....I could also buy an aftermarket damper will all sorts of markings, but that is not the question: Who has tape for a 6.5 Dia damper?RooDog

Re: 1973 302 Timing Tape
im just curious, do you have a one of a kind damper from ford? seems strange that ford would make such a weird one when so many others are available, can you have your machine shop turn your 6 1/2 damper down to 6 3/8 then you could use the 6 3/8 tape

Re: 1973 302 Timing Tape
It would deem to me that a 6 3/8 tape would do the job - it can't be off more than one or two degrees and you can compensate for that.
Guys are trying to help and you are being ????? |

Re: 1973 302 Timing Tape
Thank you, Mike. It's is good to find an intelligent man amongst the masses.
I have done an internet search and have discovered that this is a recurring problem though not well supported. I do have in my hands a timing tape from "FORD Motorsport" (not listed in their 2000 catalog) installed on a C6OE 6.5 damper. Sorry to say but there is no part number to persue. It features the four cardinal points plus 60 degress of advance noted. I looked here to FordBarn for two reasons. The main being to find the elusive 6.5 tape, but also to see what sort if dumb shit I would get in response. The latter outweighed the former....LOL..... And I have looked at MSD, MrGasket, Jeggs, Summit, and several other FORD specialty dealers. See, the quest is for the product item, not for getting the job done, I can mark my own damper or use the 6.375 tape efectivly, that should not be too hard to understand, but it seems to be. RooDog |
