gas tank
I have been thinking of taking my 30 ccpu tank to a body chemical dip in the upstate of SC. Has anybody did this before? Will this work? Thanks...

Re: gas tank
I'm very interested in all types of cleaning tried and how it worked. How about after cleaning? Can you plate the inside? coat it? will it start flaking and cause trouble? How about plugging holes? Norm

Re: gas tank
I've had 2 Model A tanks chemically stripped.
They both went to Redi-strip in Victoria BC ...long since shut down when waste disposal costs overtook net income. Both gas tanks went in rusty & grungy ...they came back with perfectly clean metal right down to the bottoms of the rust pits. It looked as if you were to unroll aluminum foil and observe the dull backside of the foil...that's how clean they looked. As far I could see inside with a flashlight, the tanks were spotless. I could not see behind the baffles. Be aware that some lead solder around the... filler neck, steering column support & choke rod support ...will be eroded away in the chemical dip process. The original sweat-soldered seal should remain intact, but the lower supports especially need maximum strength and any missing solder should be re-applied using a torch and liquid flux to achieve a nice even puddle where the support-base meets tank. Below...are pix of the filler neck -from inside- on a 31 tank that I had chemically stripped. (The white coating is tank sealer which I applied later) Visible through the sealer is a layer of solder, deftly paddled in a circle by some factory worker back in 1931. This seems to indicate the neck was installed BEFORE the tank was welded together... |

Re: gas tank
Use caution when using checmical strippers. A guy in our club had his nice 1929 tank dipped and he got it back minus the threaded neck.

Re: gas tank
Take a look at the thread I have on the forum it's called gas tank sealer before u do any thing I've learned allot since I've posted the thread and I am going to do what Brent has posted on there he tells u how to clean the gas tank just don't end up like I did I have to take and cut my tank open to clean it out cause it all ready has sealer in the tank and the only way to get the sealer out all the way is to do the cutting. But DON"T do any thing tell u read my thread or talk to Brent from U-C or some thing like that. Not kidding if u plan on cleaning your tank and sealing it read the thread I stated. reggiedog
