Default Phaeton/roadster painting question

I have a question about how to paint the door post and cowl with welting on a roadster/phaeton. You can see by the picture the front of the cowl post is painted the trim color. The cowl/gas tank and welting are painted the main body color. In what order is the painting done? Is the cowl post painted the trim color first, then the cowl and gas tank bolted in place and then somehow mask off the door post before painting the cowl/gas tank and cowl welting? I guess the cowl/gas tank could be painted separately, then installed, but then how would the welting be painted main body color?

I'm interested as well. My grandpa has his 28 Phaeton at the body shop now and they should paint it in a couple of weeks.

If anyone has close up pictures of originals that would be helpful too.

Rusty,..I remember somthing in the Paint an Finish book about a split some time in
1928, about what got painted what....I will reread it tonight. I believe Doug's is a
1929, are ALL your cars 28's ?

Rusty,

I thought it was the body(wrong) it was the color of the windshield in e-28 from
black to body color.

People have written, here on the Barn, about how Ford painted with " masks " for
the secondary colors, body color first, then the other colors. Some people have
said they paint every thing separate, including the welt, then assemble. In the day,
lacquer feathered out, it left a soft transition between the two colors, I think?

So, with out starting WW3, if you paint it separate, then assemble, is that " over
restoration ", or just being smart?

I think painting the welting by itself would be a little hard. The other concern is that when installing it (painted), would you crack the paint when it is moved around when it is installed. I tried to call Brent a couple of times, but couldn't get an answer. I am thinking that maybe the better way is to paint the cowl post the trim color and then install the cowl section and gas tank with the cowl post trim color masked off and then paint the main body color on the whole car. I think the masking material could be removed OK after the car is painted.
