Ok, maybe dual exhaust was optional? The exh manifolds are listed in the bottom chart on the page at this link. It wouldn't be the first or last time I've been wrong.

There is a picture of the 1954 dual exhaust in the 1954 Ford supplement Shop Manual it was used on the 256 Police Interceptors which shared the Mercury 256 engine.

I'm only saying it because I worked on a nice original '54 Mercury, and it had single exhaust with the crossover pipe in front of the engine going to the passenger's side manifold. I would have to assume dual exhaust was optional, but standard on 1954 Ford police cars with the Interceptor engine option. There is a '54 Police car brochure on the Old Car Manual Project that says the police cars were available with all engines including the 223 six, the 239 Y-Block and the Interceptor 256 Mercury Y-Block.

What exactly about it would be police car if it was a six banger? Back in the 50s it seemed what made a police cars was the higher horsepower engines and you could order the interceptor engine option.
Was there a package with suspension options and a bigger generator for the radio> Just curious.

They called it a Police Interceptor package, but I would believe it was also aimed at cars used for city or state workers too, etc. The package also included things like more padding in the seats and other things I can't remember. That stuff was standard, but you could choose the powertrain you wanted based on the intended use.
I just went to the Old Car Manual Project and the brochure is gone. They must have removed it, because I just looked at it a few weeks ago. Tried searching, but no luck. It was for 1954 Fords and not Mercury's, but had the Mercury 256 as the highest engine option.

When I was 8th grade, my friend and I dragged a couple of their old family cars out of the junk row and got them running. One was a 54 Ford sedan with the 256 Interceptor, 3 speed overdrive. I'm not sure now how we knew that, maybe it was on the valve cover.
