Re: Y block questions
I'm only saying it because I worked on a nice original '54 Mercury, and it had single exhaust with the crossover pipe in front of the engine going to the passenger's side manifold. I would have to assume dual exhaust was optional, but standard on 1954 Ford police cars with the Interceptor engine option. There is a '54 Police car brochure on the Old Car Manual Project that says the police cars were available with all engines including the 223 six, the 239 Y-Block and the Interceptor 256 Mercury Y-Block.

What exactly about it would be police car if it was a six banger? Back in the 50s it seemed what made a police cars was the higher horsepower engines and you could order the interceptor engine option. Was there a package with suspension options and a bigger generator for the radio> Just curious. |

Re: Y block questions
They called it a Police Interceptor package, but I would believe it was also aimed at cars used for city or state workers too, etc. The package also included things like more padding in the seats and other things I can't remember. That stuff was standard, but you could choose the powertrain you wanted based on the intended use.
I just went to the Old Car Manual Project and the brochure is gone. They must have removed it, because I just looked at it a few weeks ago. Tried searching, but no luck. It was for 1954 Fords and not Mercury's, but had the Mercury 256 as the highest engine option. Sal |
