You don't need a gear reduction starter, just switch to 12 volts and use your 6 volt starter. I have been runinng a 49-53 Merc for 7 years and at least 30,000 mines with NO problems at all, just spins over twice as fast! Regards, Tony

Tony, not bad, BUT

1. did you put 2 6v in series or did you change other equipment..12V filaments, radio,
etc?

2. What about your charging system? Is that heaven forbid, an alternator, that I see
under your hood?

3. How am I to go about selling a gear reduction starter (if I have it), with you new fangled guys putting this kind of an idea in people's heads? An even easier idea exists and I will shame myself for so saying, but....why not just park on a hill, carry a crank for a little arm exercise in emergencies, and plug that starter hole? Funnin here!

I've done this on different vehicles, and as stated, it sure spins them over.

Truth time. My 31 had the 12 volt alternator, (one wire at that!) when I bought it so I just left well enough alone. The only gauge I have is a temp and it doesn't care if I have 12v or 6v! In the beginning the alternator used to bother me. Now I just don't care, and the Good guys didn't care too much when they gave me a PERIOD PERFECT in 2005! I thought that was funny! Sorry if I botched your sale. A GEAR REDUCTION STARTER IS A BETTER WAY TO GO IF YOU ARE DEALING WITH ALL THE GAUGES ETC!
