Head Gasket and Other Repairs
Since my head gasket is leaking, I am planning to replace the gasket this fall. I am also going to put on a leakless water pump and new exhaust and valve cover gaskets. Is it worth putting on a higher compresson head (say 5.2 to 1) and are there any other checks or repairs that should be done with a head gasket change?

Re: Head Gasket and Other Repairs
A HC head is a great add on to the stock Model A motor. Make sure you get the right gasket. Inspect the head studs and make sure they are in good shape. Search the barn for other posts about HC heads and you will hear pretty much the same.

Re: Head Gasket and Other Repairs
The higher compression head is probably the best "bang for the buck" up grade you can do. The Snyder head 5.5 has been working well on the sedan we took to Texas in 2008. If you plan on anything higher than that make sure the pistons do not come too far out of the top on the block. We have an article in the next Model A Times showing a Winfield head that had a problem.

Re: Head Gasket and Other Repairs
Take a compression check before going to a HC head, you may need to do a valve and/or ring job and that would be the time to do it. You will notice a big power improvement with a HC head. A bigger carb will help too.
