Default how fast can you pull an engine?

Never pulled an engine from an A before, didn't look at the clock, but I got half way thru my 6 pack.

About 45 minutes to an hour is how long it takes me.

It depends on the quality of the car!! if it is a beater and you do not care about scratches then it should take you no tinme at all. If it is show car then 6 hours would be a good time.

Yeah, a lot factors into this. Does it have engine pans? What about an original pop-out switch that is clamped to the head? Does it have a one-piece distributor drive? Does it have a multiple-disc clutch or a solid front motor mount? When was the last time the vehicle was disassembled, --and was there any McGuyvering done at that time?? Pepe, I guess the question to you is how long does it take for you to drink the contents of one of your cans?

Good answer, Brent. And Gord's reply is right too. Getting it out is the easier part; getting it back in is what gives me fits!

I like this type of question because everyone has his own personal answer.
Only if the car is set up for fast engine changes can there be any fast times.
In 2002 when I ran my last model A hill climb at Riverside, I had the car set up so 4 of us with air wrenches could have the engine on the floor in 12 minutes. 18 minutes to reinstall, minus oil. If you build a car from the frame up, it is not hard to set it up for this. Expensive but not hard.
There was no reason to do all this except it was big fun and I had way too much time on my hands at the time.

I do not have any photos handy showing this but when installing the engine to the transmission which is already installed in the vehicle, use two 3/8 bolts (-one about 2" & one about 3" long) and remove the heads with a hacksaw and sharpen the area where those heads were removed to a dull point. These new alignment pins can be screwed into the flywheel housing on opposite sides and used as aligning pins. Since one is a tad longer, as you are pushing the engine into the chassis you will align it first and then rock the engine so the pin on the opposite side enters into the respective hole on the clutch housing. This will get you very close on alignment for the input shaft to engage. Once the engine has married with the transmission, just back those studs out with your fingers and install regular fasteners. The other thing that fights most peple is not having a frame spreader to assist getting the flywheel housing in between the rear motor mounts.

took an hour to get out...a couple days to get back in and a few extra bodies... I will invest in a frame spreader the next time around, should take 30 mins with a frame spreader

Pete,
Talk of fun, I'll bet it would be fun/interesting to see a video of you guys doing that remove/install ! Probably learn some of your secrets for such also.

Yup, but you never think of those things till later at the bar.
No secrets. Just make room to get an air wrench at all the critical bolts and use quick disconnects on fuel lines and wires. Also, leave the lifting hooks on the engine so you don't have to take time to rig the lift.

I suppose this same scenario would work when installing a transmission to an already installed engine???

Kind of like the drill team that assembles and drives a Model T chassis in ten minutes. They do this every year at the Old Car Festival at Greenfeild Village in Dearborn.

Ok now, who did I lend that chainfall to? I went to install new leaf springs in the 49 and realized the spring bushings were bad. spent 4 hours looking for new ones now I need to order them. Nothing for me is as quick as it should be.

Having worked "flat rate" for many years I have learned that it is not about the "fastest removal time",it is the total time, there are preparations made during removal that may take longer time to take apart, but much shorter time back together ---if you break, bend, damage during a fast removal it takes much longer to go together.

Most times it takes a shorter total time to take the time to get a bolt that is stuck out in 1 piece than if you "hit it with the impact" and break it off ---

in the "flat rate" book replacing the engine block(new bare block) is 7 hours including "R&R", engine and trans assembly r&r with no transfer of parts is 3.5

Took me about 4hrs to get mine out sorry no 6 pack. If there would have been it would have bad news because I am a slow drinker but a fast drunk. Don't know when I will ever get it back in though.
