'29 windlace installation

Am I correct that in order to install new windlace in my '29 business coupe I will need to drill the rivets out on the track on the door pillar? It looks like the windlace installs in the channel located there.

I put new windlace in my 30 coupe. However I did remove the doors just to make it easier. On my 30 I did not need to remove the channel. The windlace just slid down the channel top to bottom and as I remember there were some clips that held it in place.

Bob, to answer your question, yes you will need to drill the tubular rivets and remove the windlace retainer to install the windlace. We use a modified C-clamp to spread the tubular rivet. Originally, the windlace was installed with a paper cover over the cloth part and installed. When assembled, the body was painted and the paper covering masked the cloth. During trimming of the interior, the paper was removed however you will see evidence of the brown paper when the retainer is removed on unmolested cars.

Bob, you are correct in that you will need to remove the rivets on the windlace trim pieces to install the new windlace. Originally, when installed in the plants, the windlace was stitched to a thin cardboard strip and covered in a paper sheath. It was then installed with the metal trim pieces and rivets, then all was painted. The paper was then removed, which kept the windlace from being painted along with the trim and rivet heads.
I might also add that in order to install new rivets, you will need to remove the side windshield trim pieces.
