Default Best tires for touring? Anyone using the Coker Comp V's

Forgive me, I did search, both on Google in general and on this site. Poor search engine? So if this is asked before, sorry.

The Coker Comp V's are an interesting possibility, and very affordable. Do they howl on a concrete road at speed?

Are the Lester's worth the extra cash? B. F. Goodrich? Firestone? Universals?

I must say it's nice to have so many choices for these cars! So what do you tour guru's all like, and why?

They seem to be the wrong width. Are not stock A's in 19" 475?

of the repro original bias ply tires, BF Goodrich ride very well, wear well and look correct. The Excelsior Stahl Sport radials, while not original looking, ride really well too. They are expensive, but last much longer than the bias ply tires.

I think 4.75 - 5.00 X 19 is always stated together and considered interchangeable.

Drooled over these a bit. Same tread style as the Comp V's. Noisy? By the time you buy the radial tubes, it just about doubles the cost. Still, might be worth it. We spend lots of money on other stuff to make the A's a bit more efficient than factory show room floor.

Anybody running this tread? Comp V's or Stahl's.

I have a brand new (NOS?) pair of Universal tires that are 4.75x19. I also have a brand new pair of Firestone 4.75-5.00x19. Stacked up side by side, the Firestones are a much larger tire. They stand almost an inch taller and appear to be wider, haven't measured that part yet.

Good to know. Thanks! Taller is better of course, thinking engine RPM on a stock car.

I have been using universal for the last 15K as my daily and have no problems at all with them, I think they are 81.00 from Coker right now.

I just installed new Goodyear tires on my A a few months ago, and am very pleased with them. They ride and track much better than my prior tires, although they are pricey.

I did notice that some of the tires say 4 ply and some, like the more expensive Lester's say 4 play rating, which means 2 ply's and thick rubber. Not sure I can live with that on a rag tire.

Mark, where did you find the $81 tires? Do you have phone/website?

I went with BF Goodrich Silvertown 550's. They are slightly taller, and slightly wider. They really look good on the car and everyone comments on how much they love the look of them. They ride a lot better than my old firestones and I already have double the mileage on them than my previous firestones, and they still have tread left. They were also cheaper than firestones and goodyears.

I am using Coker's Excelsior Stahl Sport Radial (500R19) tires on my Sedan, and they are great.

Pat, do you notice any noise from that tread pattern at all.

Thanks everyone for the help.

They were $81.00 earlier this year.

No tread noise and the car handles great.

I'm running Excelsiors on my fenderless roadster/speedster and tire noise isn't noticeable. Handles like a slot car! I have BF Goodrich Silvertowns on the CCPU. They're adequate tires..what can I say. Picked up 15" tire/wheel combo at Tractor Supply for a spare for my car trailer today and choked on the price at $157. And they were made in China!

I personally haven't had any experience with them... but I think they are the ones that Jonathon Klinger put on the Tudor (365daysofA) and I had spoken with him at Hershey a couple of years ago and he said they were great. I personally favor the Firestones as they perform and steer great, and I like the way they look. Old garfields are the worst. My Model A mentor and friend Terry Oberer had them on his Tudor and I finally got him to put on a set of Firestones, and he thought he had power steering!
