Default What sealer to use......fuel shut off valve?

After too long of having a slow leaking fuel shut off valve I have a new one in hand and am ready to install. Question: to prevent the new valve from leaking where it screws into the bottom of the fuel tank, what's the best sealer to coat the threads with? I do not believe that Teflon tape is the correct way to go. Any ideas, and I thank you for your guidance on this question.

I used Permatex Thread Sealant. But you may not need any sealant. The joint should seal mechanically, and not need anything. I just don't trust that, and so I use this goop.

Upon the advice of the experts here, used Permatex #2 gas leaking issue (I replace the needle valve and with Permatex #2, no gas leak at all..

FWIW: Used this for over 58 years. Perfect for "loose" Model A shut off valves threaded to tank, "loose" carburetor gas line fittings, "loose" sediment bowl fittings, etc.

Forgot to mention past experiences:

Usually one is very careful when tightening the non-ferrous brass fuel shut-off valve, & also the gas line fittings so as not to strain or strip these soft brass threads.

On the fuel shut-off valve going into the tank, just be prepared when tightening the fuel shut-off valve that the integral 90 degree gas line fitting is never in the correct 3:00 o'clock position when looking at it upwards from the floor board.

If found reasonably tight say at the 9:00 o'clock position, tightening 1/2 turn more "may" strip the soft brass threads in contact with 80 year old beat up steel tank threads.

Here is where this stick comes in handy:

1. Apply pipe dope to male threads, insert in tank all the way to coat tank female threads.

2. Remove shut-off valve, re-coat male threads with pipe dope, & re-insert same to achieve close to the 9:00 o'clock position ...... then back off to the correct "exact" 3:00 o'clock position.

3. Connect gas line fitting "with above stick pipe dope" to fuel shut-off valve.

4. Wait at least a couple of hours for pipe dope to semi-cure prior to providing fuel in gas tank.

Just trying to help.

It's even worse with the '31 indented firewall where you only have one shot at it being clocked correctly. Mine seizes up at about the 3 o'clock position. That would mean that you'd either have to back it off 3/4 turn, or tighten it another 1/4 turn risking stripping the threads.

I've used Permatex #2 in the past and it works great. As it was mentioned above, it isn't affected by gasoline.

And remember, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER apply ANY pipe goop to the FEMALE part of the fitting!!! It will be pushed inside the tank, or whatever & cause a multitude of problems down the road.
If you don't understand which part of the fitting is FEMALE, I feel sorry for you! Just form your left thumb & forefinger into a CIRCLE & poke your right forefinger in & out of the CIRCLE & you'll NEVER be confused again!!

I use a product called Gasoila. It is used in the oilfields around here. It looks like Rectorseal, but will seal any gas or oil threads without washing off or plugging up lines. It is made by Federal Process Corp. Search the web on Gasoila.com. It is the best I have found.
