Question 28-29 Step plate

Hi Guys:

I've gone through the Judging standards and the books I have and can't find out if the original car had a "gasket" between the rumble seat step plate and the fender. I have a rubber gasket but I think it was just an addition to keep the paint from chipping. Is it like the door handles and there's just a black paper gasket not a rubber gasket?

Look forward to your input.

I believe I read somewhere, I can't remember where, that Ford did use a gasket between the step plate and the fender. I think it is a good idea to use a gasket, probably a rubber one, since that is all that seem to be available, to eliminate the chance the paint would chip. A lot of weight could be put on the plate with a person getting into and out of the rumble seat. The picture below is of a fine point 29 roadster that was at the 2016 MARC meet. Note that it has a gasket under the step plate.

My 29 Coupe has a square step plate on the fender. Did some come through with a round step plate? John

The step plate on the fender did have a pad between the step plate and the fender. It was a hard fiberboar,d very dark brown or black. It was flat and did not have a lip on it.

lindy williams, post #5 has given the correct answer :

-"The step plate on the fender did have a pad between the step plate and the fender. It was a hard fiberboar,d very dark brown or black. It was flat and did not have a lip on it."

Or at least that is what all of my five originals have, and all the originals I have seen and collected over the last 50 years.

These ARE covered extensively in the Judging Standards, Area 15 - Exterior Plating. The information you are seeking is on pages 15 - 14 and 15 - 15.
It states there were four styles of step plate pads, and then goes into detail on each.

Thanks Guys for the info. I'll read the judging standards again. I'm trying to make it right.

Well I've checked the Judging standards and mine edition only goes up to pg. 15-10. So there must be a newer revision then I have. Thanks again. JP

Hey, John. Rev 4-2016 covers the different types of rubber step pad gaskets. If you need the info, give me a call.
