Re: Bad news for a straight 6. Need a new head...
You can grind a slot and get a big honkin flathead screw driver and or impack driver to get the tap out. If its broke fix it. 20 buck for a a impack drive hammer driven .

Richard Crow, thats what worries me.
Richard, there is no tap in there. It's an extractor. And its flush with the head. So a slot wouldnt work. |

Re: Bad news for a straight 6. Need a new head...
What I used to do (after complaining to the easy out guy) is to take a small drill and drill around one side of the extracter, use a punch to knock it into the new hole... This does work better on larger bolts...
If you call around, you may find a shop that can help... You might Google bolt extraction... Karl |

Re: Bad news for a straight 6. Need a new head...
I actually talked to two shops that were recommended to me by coworkers/friends. Both shops basically came to the conclusion that it would almost be worth buying a new head for the $125 rather than spending $70 (1hr labor charge) to try and get it out. BUT, all is not lost, I have a friend who is sure he can get it out for me at his job. So, I figure why not give it to him so that while I'm at work, it can be his headache, and not mine. I told him I found some links and have ideas, but he's insistent that I give the head to him so he can do it. Hey, if he wants to try and get it out for free, who am I to stop him.

Also, a little bit of an update, after getting shot down from the machine shops yesterday about fixing the head, I'm taking it to a friend who is positive he can get it out. I'll be dropping it off to him in about 40min, so I'm kind of excited. Also, after about 8 phone calsl yesterday, I located an NOS head in Milwaukee, so I will be buying that. Can't beat the price for $120. Even just to have it is worth it since it was so hard to find. |

Find a shop with an EDM machine. It can eat a steal stud from an aluminum block with out hurting the aluminum. so it should work in your CI head.

Ron, the guys that do the EDM told me that just the setup/labor would take around an hour, and that would be at least $70. I actually dropped the head off to a friend who does machine work and he should actually be working on it as we speak.

Re: Bad news for a straight 6. Need a new head...
Well guys, good news. My friend put it on a mill with a carbide bit, and worked his magic and he got the stud and extractor out. And the other stud that was stuck. Said it took him about 7 or 8 minute.

Re: Bad news for a straight 6. Need a new head...
Well I read through this and see that a remedy has been found. I will add that we extract tools that have been broken off all the time although it would be easier to fix if the customer didn't try to do it first. If you have doubt to your ability take it to the shop first it saves trouble and $ in the long run. Glad this story had a happy ending.

Re: Bad news for a straight 6. Need a new head...
Mctim, I didn't have any doubt that I couldn't get it out. I also didn't have any doubt that my friend who was using the extractor couldn't get it out. Just so happened that it snapped. But I'm with you onn the if you doubt your abilities don't do it. That's why once the extractor snapped, I started calling around places. Luckily a close friend who works with machining equipment was able to do it for me.

Re: Bad news for a straight 6. Need a new head...
I just sold a running but noisy `51 six for $100. I kept the starter and temp sensor. I let the 12V alternator go with it. Someone told me the water pumps are scarce.

Re: Bad news for a straight 6. Need a new head...
The 1951 were the H series straight 6's. So those parts wouldn't work on my motor. I wish they would though. So much easier to find parts for.

No worries, not pointing fingers. Just saying it saves trouble in the long run.
Just so happens I'm building a six like yours right now, only took two months to get pistons from Egge. |
