Brake Adjusting wedge dust cover install
Well been doing the front brakes today and replaced most of the internals including the worn adjusting wedge. Now the problem is installing the wedge dust cover. I bought new ones from snyders and they seem to be the same size but when I go to install them they are slightly bigger than the whole. I guess they are pressed in but in the Lee Andrews book I see no mention of that or a special tool.
So is there a trick to this? I the old ones seem to have the same problem. I took them out by just unscrewing the wedge and knocking it out from the back side with no problem. Thanks again in advance |

Re: Brake Adjusting wedge dust cover install
Take a large socket setting on the workbench and place the new adjuster cap over the top of the socket with the convex shape of the cap facing downward. This will support the cap on the outter perimeter. Using a ball-pein hammer, use the balled end of the hammer head and hit the cap in the center to make the convex shape deeper in the cap. This will allow the cap to just fit into the housing of the adjuster and then hit the center of the crown to spread the shape where it presses it into the recess lip.

I have use Brent's method of cap installation on several sets of brake rebuilds. It works.

Re: Brake Adjusting wedge dust cover install
I have been able to install them by making sure there are no burrs around the recess and that the slot it fits into is not slightly collapsed. I have always used old original caps. I make sure there are no burrs on the caps as well. I slide one edge of the cap into the slot in the recess, then with a hammer tap on the oposite side of the cap. Sometimes the use of a screwdriver or chisel persuades it in the rest of the way.
