My 40 pickup's stock engine is cracked 3"along the pan rail between the pan screw holes and the edge of the block. And an inch into the inner side of the block L shaped, At the center bearing. I think it was caused by frozen water because it doesn't appear to be stress. any thoughts on a fix?

If it's into the web, it's fatal.

Call Frank Casey in MA. He has been stitching cast iron for 40 years. Recently did a 221 block for me. Describe your situation and see what he says. Where are you located? Frank is a nice guy.

I welded a 409 Chevy block that had an 8'' crack on both sides from freezing. As long as it is just the outside of the block that got pushed out it will weld fine, but you can't always see what has happened on the other side. The old cast iron was good cast and it welds just fine. If you weld it, have it magnafluxed or pressure tested after to make sure you repaired all the crack.

A good cast iron repair shop can repair all but the very worst blocks. Search out a good shop and get an estimate.
